HP Netserver LC3 PII 450MHz 512MB 30GB IDE 2X9.1GB SCSI

I'm in the middle of my first GenToo install, and like to say this website, forum and docs have been a great help. I just like to know how long the emerge kde is going to take? It's been running for like 8 hours now.

kde takes forever to compile from source; it's a huge package of stuff plus qt-based things tend to take longer to compile normally.

not qt-based things, but anything C++ (mozilla, openoffice, kde, etc..)

You're probably emerging the dependencies too. Did you emerge xfree86 beforehand? If not it'll emerge that too. That's the only dependency I know of off the top of my head, but there's probably more.

I did the same on a PII 400Mhz and it took around 50-60 hours.

Yes, you are using ancient hardware and the time it takes will reflect that.

I emerged KDE on a P4 2.8ghz with Hyperthreading and a distcc farm of other P4's and had KDE up and running in a couple of hours.

It's all about hardware and memory...
You might have been better off using GRP or even KDE-CVS 20040329 builds are out (which are also binaries) rather than going from source.

Anyhow, welcome to Gentoo :)

will the extras i put in the USE statement affect how long it takes?

there were only like 4 or 5 variable in the support docs, but mine looks like this:

USE="-gtk -gnome qt kde cdr samba apache2 emacs-w3 imap mmx mysql perl"

Orcrist, gnome is faster to compile, at least... And, no, the compile will NOT resume unless you stopped it with ctrl-z. KDE takes a long time, that's just a fact of life.

On my laptop, emerging kde from source took an entire weekend.
On my pc/server I emerged gnome in an hour or so.

(first one is a p4 2,53Ghz with 256Mb of Ram, second one is a p4 2,8Ghz prescott with 1024Mb of Ram (and u320 scsi disk))

Kde is really nice if you want to impress some windows users with a lot of neat options. If, on the other hand you don't want anything fancy and just want things to be simple and good, I suggest gnome.

ps: If you want a fast install, use prebuilt packages. (but if you want to feel the strength of gentoo, you obviously need to compile it yourself)

Well, it finished finally. took ~32-36 hours (finished sometime while I was asleep last night). I edited rc.conf and rebooted. And booya...kde up and going no problems.

If you are going to continue to use a language such as yours, I suggest you drop Gentoo altogether. This is not a place to use the language you do. I guess it puts you around 13-15 years old. Please go and read the Forum Guidlines if you have a problem understanding what and how to say things. If you still can't moderate your language, then don't post!.

miqorz, it's kind of a rectangle/square thing. You can be 15 and not act like Orcrist, but if you act like Orcrist, you are probably 15.

no, just another reason to hate g++.. KDE isn't that much bigger in lines of code than GNOME or the Linux Kernel (actually, depending on how much of the kernel you compile, and what KDE packages you compile, the linux kernel is bigger)

Anyway, I suggest using binary builds of KDE.. you can have it installed in minutes. Both Iamlarryboy and Gentoo provide binary builds of KDE.

I apologize, but I haven't seen you use such language as the poster did.
But the way he writes, is just not tolerated here and is in no way going to get him much help or answers other than what I posted.

In OTW, there is a little bit more tolerance with regards to language, but not in the other forums.

His post may have been fine on a board of with similary minded poeple, but not here.

It's allright and all.. I just don't like it when people make generalizations about people based on their age..

Some of us 15 year olds have a good head on our shoulders... I just wish I was one of them. :P
