Any idea why my dialup connection comes a complete standstill when I'm playing mp3s via XMMS?

{edit} Further investigation: any sounds played seems to prevent net traffic. {/edit}

How do you installed your sound card, in kernel or via alsa, what sound card?
Wich version of xmms do you use?
How are you connected to internet?

I had the same problem with mandrake 8.2, It was a bug with sound output plugin, I changed this one and never had the problem again.

The soundcard is an Audigy using the latest emu10k1 driver (modprob'ed during boot) and Open Sound System. XMMS is the current ebuild (at work so can't check version). I dial up using an external modem (Hayes Accura) on a serial port. I don't think it's a XMMS problem specifically as playing UT also stopped the download.

I don't know how to test where the problem comes from. Maybe trying install alsa and check if that works. It can also comes from the dialup session. Someone else any idea?
