Something that I think would be really cool (maybe I'm the only one), is to require (as much as you can) that all ebuilders post any new revision into the News and Announcement Forums. A post like this:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=17975

is something that I find very useful. I just wish it was done for all the packages out there that people are building, and it helps to understand what actually is being fixed or added with the later ebuilds.

Is it a good idea to require all ebuild changes to be posted to this forum?

A new ebuild announcement forum?

Taking a quick peek at the Gentoo Packages page, it shows that there are currently ~2500 packages in Gentoo. That's up from ~1700 in April of this year.

I really, really don't see how any sort of forum announcement system could be manageable or scalable with that many packages in the mix.

Not only that, but there's no way we could "require" ebuild maintainers to post anything on the forums, nor would I want to try. To me, that seems overly intrusive and burdensome. A better solution might be to write a script that greps the Portage tree for datestamps to determine what's been changed and/or updated. You could then compile that information and post it somewhere for others to view. That's an excersise left up to the reader. :) (though if someone really wants to write a script that will do such a thing, and it works well, isn't overly CPU intensive, etc. I'll post it up on the forums server for others to use.)

klieber,

I respectfully disagree. A) All 2500 packages are not ALWAYS being changed. I would reckon that a large portion of them stay static at one time. As far as the remaining packages that are updated semi-regularly, save only the ones from the last week, and maybe archive the rest. It's a good way to see how far Gentoo has come too a couple of years from now.

And my point was that you don't have to "require" ebuilders to post anything. But you can encourage it. You can explain that it's useful to the community. My hunch is that most of the ebuilders would buy in.

My .02 cents.

Um...OK.

Either way, the most effective system, IMO, would be a script that automatically summarizes changes made to the Portage tree and writes those out to a web page somewhere. It could get the info either from CVS change history or from the Portage tree itself. This would be much more efficient than a forum where some ebuild maintainers might post and others wouldn't.

Again, if someone wants to whip up a reasonably lightweight script, I will be happy to host it on the forums server.
