Ive got a old Quantum Fireball lct10/30(?), its an 30 gigz 0,5 mb cache and 5400rpm disk.
When i try to boot up with the 1.2, 1.4 and even the 1.4.1 livecd i get this after a few lines after i pressed enter at the boot promt:
Code: | ide-floppy driver 0.99.newide
Partition check
hdb: |
from there, it wont do a freakin thing.. ive tryed to set up partitions with PQ magic, writing zeros to the disk, checking it for errors... nothings wrong with the disk...
i had mandrake 7.2 and redhat 6.2, BOTH installed 100% fine on the same disk, no error...
but then just for fun i downloaded redhat 8, and tested it, same problem...
but then, for some reason, debian woddy (3.0.rc0?) works like hell...
I just can figure out whats wrong...
Ive check the bios, everything fine there, jumper is set to slave, slave on the cabel (i must use slave, when i try setting jumper and cabel to master it still becomes slave.)
will maybe the 1.1 gentoo boot cd work? since it seems to be some kind of a kernel problem, or?
thanks for your help |

I wonder if support for your IDE controller is missing in the CD kernel. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Is there no master on that channel? I thought that was an IDE no-no, but I'm not really up to speed on my x86 hardware knowledge. Have you tried other cables and/or double-checked the jumper settings? I've never seen a drive that refuses to switch like this, and perhaps this is related to your problem. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

ive managde to get the harddrive to become master on cabel, andin bios...
But ive got the same problem
I think it has something with the dma settings, like it wants to enable ata100 on the drive, but it only supports ata33....
the ide cabels are ata133, shouldnt have anything to say or? |

If you're not getting this drive to be recognized...
Take out the other hard drives from the path and see if it will be recognized on its own. Put it on it's own channel (IDE1) and have the CDROM and/or ZIP on IDE2.
If all else fails try to go with cable select on your jumper settings. Which means you'll have to use the end plug on the cable to make it a master.
IIRC dma will be autodetected at boot, so it will assume 33MHz first before it tries out higher settings. hdparm was not added at bootup until the latest version of Gentoo, I think.
You can try to use hdparm and shut off those settings, but I guess that won't help if you can't get it to boot! |
