Ok, call me stupid, but I just can't figure it out. In an effort to get things like gimp and other gnome apps (or gtk, or gtk2, or gtk+ or whatever it is) using widgets that aren't hideous, I've emerged gnome. I got gnome running, I think, and I tried selecting a theme (bluecurve in this case, just to see if I could get it to work), but it din't affect the gimp (though the various gnome dialog boxes and whatnot seemed to take it just fine.) I even tried rebuilding the gimp. I do use KDE3 for my normal desktop, but would like my gnome apps to look OK too. Also, I couldn't figure out how to get antialiasing to work in gnome - I didn't see any sort of checkbox or anything on the font selection screen.
My experience with Gnome is minimal (and outdated - mostly with a few months ago before Gnome 2). _________________ "An empty head is not really empty; it is stuffed with rubbish. Hence the difficulty of forcing anything into an empty head."

The answer is simple. The current stable GIMP still uses GTK 1.2. When you change theme in Gnome, you change the theme for GTK 2.0 only.
If you emerge gtk-theme-switch-1.0.1, you can use the "switch" program to change theme for GTK 1.
Alternatively, you can install the development version of GIMP... but it's kind of unstable. |

And for anti-aliasing in GTK 2, make sure the environment variable GDK_USE_XFT=1. |

Ah, that would explain it. Thanks, that's exactly what I needed to know. _________________ "An empty head is not really empty; it is stuffed with rubbish. Hence the difficulty of forcing anything into an empty head."

Gimp 1.3.7 which is the current beta is pretty stable for me. Didn't come across any major probs and the UI is GREAT since it uses GTK 2.0 which is a very nice visual improvement over GTK 1.x. |

Yes, 1.3.7 has significant improvements over the stable 1.2.3 and generally works fine. Only the last time I had it installed, it behaved quite strange so I went back to the stable one. Hopefully 1.3 will be released as a stable 1.4 soon. |
