Issue with USB External Drive (Fuse and Samba)

I have an external USB drive (1TB) setup to be shared over my home network via Samba. The drive can be seen by other computers no problem and files can be copied and deleted. However, if I want to copy a number of files to the drive, some will get copied to the drive with no issues, but eventually ...

Can you try deleting the partition and recreate it under linux (gfdisk, fdisk...)
Then run mkfs.ntfs -f /dev/sdX1
I've tried this before with no luck.

# mkfs.ntfs -f /dev/sdc1

Creating NTFS volume structures.
ntfs_resident_attr_value_resize(): Entering for new size 56.
ntfs_attr_record_resize ...

Did you unmount your disk correctly under windows?
You can try:
Under windows:
chkdsk D: /f
Under linux
ntfsfix /dev/sdc1
This worked as far as I can tell...
# ntfsfix /dev/sdc1
NTFS volume version is 3.1.
NTFS partition /dev/sdc1 was processed successfully.
But I still can't mount it. Weird ...

Fair question, I have it enabled in the kernel and also have sys-fs/fuse installed. Do I need one and not the other? Is there a conflict?

Code: Select all

I've fiddled further with this drive. I opened my Windows 7 VM and formatted to FAT32 and formatted again to NTFS which created one partition. I still can't mount it. I do have different error messages.

I originally opened this post and need to re-visit the issue again. I've done a clean installation, changed drives, and reformatted. I'm still unable to mount an external NTFS drive. Can someone help me out?

Here is what I see...

Seeing if anyone else has advice here...

Should I use gptfdisk or parted to recreate the partitions and then do "mkfs.ntfs" on the new partition?

This looks like a GPT partitioned disk. Don't use fdisk on it, but gptfdisk, cgdisk or parted instead.

Also ensure that your kernel has CONFIG_EFI_PARTITION enabled.
Thanks for the reply. I haven't heard of cgdisk. Are you saying to use gptfdisk or parted to recreate the partitions and then do ...

Unable to Mount an External Drive with NTFS-3G

I've been able to mount NTFS drives in the past using the ntfs3g sys package. For some reason, I've been unable to mount a new drive on my clean installation. I believe that I've configured my kernel correctly and installed the ntfs3g package correctly, but can't figure it out. I've also tried a few ...

Have you changed the fstab entries for the disk reference change? I would suggest refencing the disk partitions by label or UUID. It allows the fstab to be used with the IDE drivers and the PATA drivers.

You need to change the kernel line in thr grub configuration file to change root=/dev/hda3 to ...

All your drives should be sd X nodes, like I said above. Since you have hd X nodes, you are probably still using the old IDE drivers instead of the new PATA drivers. What is the output of lspci ; lspci -n ; zgrep -E '^[^#]' /proc/config.gz ?

I'm not sure why I didn't do this before posting, but I deleted a lot of temp files that I no longer needed. After doing that, my system is running better. I was out of space so the error messages were true.

Also, looking at your fstab, you are referencing /dev/hd? devices that are resizefs. Is that correct? It is incorrect for him to do that. Modern systems should be using SATA/PATA drivers, so all hard disks should be /dev/sd X . Since fdisk shows some hda nodes, we know that the OP's kernel is ...

Unable to Diagnose Problem with Swap or Root file system

I'm having a hard time figuring out the problem with my Gentoo installation. I am unable to do anything within the environment. Most of the message are about swap space and disk space, but I'm unable to verify if they are indeed full. I don't think either of them are actually full.

Could you post a few of the config files that you used and edited to get this working?

I can copy/paste files into my TimeMachine directory, but I cannot get TimeMachine to backup anything. I just need a little direction in how to get this working. I'd appreciate it.
