When I moved to linux on my server I tried different approaches, already tried Debian (both Sarge and Woody) but wasn't satisfied with it. For example, to be able to compile something against openssl, you have to have the SSL headers, which in this case, are a separate package. Took me about a day ...

Een schijf die een 'tik' maakt is sowieso niet bepaald goed, heb je geen garantie meer op dat ding? Zo ja, terugbrengen die hap.. de schijf is kapot of staat op het punt je meer problemen te geven dan ie al deed :)

This is honestly very nifty, though I still find it weird there isn't a possibility to add different logo's without having to 'hack' it like this. Anyway, just applied the thing, works nice over here.. Even that logo looks sweet there ;)

First off, very nice howto. However, I'm not gonna use it since it nearly kills my p4 2.6 (read: apache/mysql get slow because of it).

Anyway, when you're speaking about security, wouldn't it be better to run it as an other user then 'nobody'?

A snippet from the gentoo Security handbook: ( Here ...

No, /24 means there are 24 bits in use for the network. So, seeing as you have /32 with ipv4 you have 8 bits left to use for host addresses (2 ^8). So you'll have 256 addresses to use for the network. However, 2 addresses are unusable (.0 (network), .255 (broadcast)), so you can use 254 address for ...

Topic: after gcc-3.4.3 emerge, emerge itself won't work anymore

Hi,
this solved the problem for me:

1. ln -s /usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.4.4/libstdc++.so.6 /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6
2. gcc-config 1
3. fix_libtool_files.sh 3.4.4
4. fix_libtool_files.sh 3.4.3-20050110

Now you are able to switch to another gcc-config again.
See gcc-config -l ...

Replies: 51
Views: 70965

Two things:
1.) emerge sync is not slow because of downloading, i think. I sync over a 100 mbit lan. The issue is the reading from and writing to the fs. So this MIGHT be an improvement using mysql.
2.) I didn't look at the script, so I might be wrong: Moving portage to a DB is worth nothing. You ...

First off, very very nice! Speeds up emerge sync by about 3 minutes on my box (P2 400 MHz, 256mb ram.. ata66 hdd, mysql running on an ata133 controller)

However, there's a small problem with equery it seems, haven't tried the other commands

# equery size gcc
* sys-devel/gcc-3.3.4-r1
