To this:

Not totally sure it will make a difference, but then it would match my working setup.

I think if you select Settings-> Autostarted Applications you can add beryl-manager to autostart when loading XFce, but I haven't tried it.

There may be a syntax error in the .desktop file. Is the problem with one game, or all games? And, did you make the .desktop file yourself?

You could edit an existing .desktop file that you know works.

Put copies of the .desktop files into ~/.local/share/applications, see if that does anything.

I've found that sometimes I have to logout then back in for some items to appear in the menu. Have you tried that?

Yes, and I've emerged Thunar with and without the 'plugin' USE flag, also have re-emerged Xarchiver.

When I first installed xfce 4.4, I could click on an archive in Thunar and it would open the archive in Xarchiver. Some packages have been upgraded since then, now it no longer opens the archives when clicking on then in Thunar.
