Are small caps not available by default?

I've tried putting some small caps into my thesis with \textsc (also tried \sc), but apparently small caps aren't in the default install because i get this warning:
Font shape `OT1/cmr/bx/sc' undefined(Font) using `OT1/cmr/bx/n' instead on input line 1. Font shape `OT1/cmr/bx/sc' undefined(Font ...

Remounting read-only causes segfault!

Does anyone have any idea why that is the case?

Filenames preceded by dash

I copied a bunch of directories from a FAT filesystem to a Reiser filesystem, and one of the filenames was preceded by two dashes. Now i can't do any wildcard operations on that directory, and any attempt to delete or rename the offending file gives me the error unrecognized option: '--filename ...

I can't seem to mount any of them. But the issue is that i know that there are two more song tracks on the CDs, and they don't play- don't even show up in XMMS. This is for multiple CDs, and every one of them ends after n-2 tracks.

CD audio playback missing some songs

So i was all excited because i got CD audio playback to work finally. However, i noticed that XMMS is stopping before the end of the album. In fact, i can't get it to go beyond the 14th song on the album, and there are 16! I don't think the last two are "extras" or anything funky. Just two more ...

Mine is doing the same thing. All of the sounds are queued up, and come out one at a time. It's annoying. I'm using a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz card.

I have a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz card. It is driving me bonkers. When an album finishes, the backlog of system sounds can go on for a minute or more. I'd rather have it drop extra sounds than queue them!

You can play without an analog cable from the drive

In the options for the cdaudio player in XMMS, there is an option to enable direct transfer instead of using the chintzy analog cable from the drive to the sound card headers. If you long since threw away all of those cables like me, enable that option, and voila!

Sweet, it works.

Thanks for the reply.

I did try that, of course. It then pops up another konqueror window, and asks again which application to use to open it. Ad infinitum.

I also never get a window opening when i select Settings->Configure Konqueror

What's up with that? Is 3.4 still this buggy, or is it just me?

Hmmm. Nope, i don't have that option. What does it do?

I can get a glxgears speed of several thousand, so i guess acceleration is working under the Allow GLX with composite option. What i'd like to do is disable composite, if possible. Do you know how to do that? Maybe that's just not an option.

I ...

Okay, now onto the next problem....

Okay, once i got GLX fixed, i was able to run the install for SMAC from the CD. I installed the game, and ran it, but after switching to full screen, while displaying the Firaxis logo, it page faulted. Soooo close! Is this game just too abusive of read/write memory space to run in linux? Say it isn ...

Resolving the composite vs glx issue

I can't get GLX working again on my system. It was fine about six months ago, but now there's no acceleration. For example, if i run glxgears, i get this error message: Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
glxgears: Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual.

After going ...

This is a bit late, but i can give you an update of my experiences with Misterhouse.

GLX doesn't work, and that includes glxgears. I get the error about no display available, etc. I'm 99.9% sure the problem is that composite is enabled, i'm just not sure how to disable it and retain the ability to start X.

I have a GF4200

One (hopefully the only) reason GLX isn't working is because of this bit, which inserted itself into my xorg.conf:

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

Apparently GLX isn't compatible with composite. However, i've no idea where that composite section came from. I tried ...

It worked before

Thanks, but that's been done. I have the nvidia module installed and am using it for X, and have emerged nvidia-glx. It just doesn't provide glx acceleration. I found this thread that sounds like a similar problem, but falling back to the older glibc didn't help.

I know that i had hardware ...

Woah, cool! (WINE impressive, but page faults for SMAC)

So, i want to get rid of my virus-infested windows partition. I have some programs i'm more adept at in windows, and some games that only run in windows.

I emerged wine today.

I ran Irfanview from the mounted windows partition...

Voila!

Amazing. I just can't get over it.

So i did the same ...

No local browse in 3.4 Konqueror

I've just installed KDE 3.4, and it seems snappier to me (unless i enable translucency- holy frijole what a cold-tar fest!). However, i can't browse any local directories using konqueror- it asks me which program to use to open it. That includes home directory, etc. Do i need a different module to ...

Kmail: Endless dependencies

I wanted to add kmail to my new, lean and mean 3.4 install of KDE. However, after looking through the dependencies, i think i won't. Good grief... why does it depend on the entire PIM suite? Is there a self-standing alternative?

This is not working that way for me- the sounds are all queued up, and continue serially until finished. Is there something extra required to get dmix to work than installing alsa?

I hate arts. No offense to the developers, but somehow it crashes all the time and throws error messages at me all the time. For this reason, I would add "-arts" to your USE flags and then recompile KDE (emerge kde) without arts support, then using the KDE Control Panel force KDE to use the real ...

There's really not been a lot done to the /etc/make.conf file since i installed gentoo six months ago. Here's most of it:

CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -march=pentium3 -fomit-frame-pointer"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
USE="mmx sse alsa cups ppds usb kde qt gnome gtk mysql pda"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
