Irets,

This comes up every now and again. As a result I wrote Build In A Chroot

It could do with some polish before being moved to the main Wiki.
Feedback here or on the Talk page would be good.
I wonder if my problem is also something others encountered.
Point 8 is why the chroot way doesn't ...

I guess it's the display driver crashing the system.
And you didn't changed runlevels to start the display server? Because if you start the display server by changing runlevels
then maybe it also stops your sshd.

Hm,... maybe it needs libinput in the xorg drivers
and it's missing or so... Not sure about this.
The debug output of X should give some hints.

You can select the kernel right? and with the other kernel it
boots into something usable ?
Then I suggest disable the autostart of everything that tries ...

As a practical matter, I question the value of patching meson.build after running meson_src_configure
I should make a single patch that patches the source/input meson file.
Now I know what to look out for.
Probably there is something to copy (a lot of meson packages) that , if added via patch ...

Did you test these patches before posting them?
Actually, I only compiled it and did not even restart the window system,...
It seems my package is installed and can print out the help,...
That's not a proper test and I admit I don't even remember doing the "--help" test.
Sorry, I should at least ...

You ran into [bug=908254]Bug 908254[/bug] unfortunately. Xwayland links to libsystemd if it's installed without being explicitly told to, so it wasn't a proper use conditional dependency that would have been guarded against being selected.
:-) Cool thanks, for this thread , I think you solved ...

I do not think that Xwayland has an "--help" flag. Do you see the error also if you execute
image/usr/bin/Xwayland -help # one dash only!
Yes with -help it's exactly the same message.
I also thought that programs like "X" want only one dash even for their
long options. But maybe with "--help ...

I ran it with
Xwayland --help
and it spit out the complain about the missing systemd lib.
I don't want to reinstall it because my terminal emulators need Xwayland with my configuration.
But I could run the extracted binary. There is essentially only the binary in the package. And the dependencies ...

[SOLVED] Did I misuse gentoo or is it a bug?

I emerged x11-base/xwayland-23.2.2 and my system fetched it as signed
binpkg from some official mirror.
It installed the binpkg xwayland-23.2.2-6.gpkg.tar.
I think the "-6" at the end is because it fits my use flags.
But the binary can not run because it wants systemd.
ldd image/usr/bin/Xwayland ...

There are a lot of hardware specific framebuffer dlivers in the framebuffer menu that are only useful with last millennium GPUs.
They mostly interfere with the operation of the GPU, so must be off.

The exceptions are
VESA, which an only be used on BIAS systems or with BIOS booting ...

After you are back in any linux terminal it is enough to press Alt-Fkey to switch ...

You could, but it was only meant to show how I use them to clean my screen and add some color.
It was only meant for testing.
You can test a running xserver with these commands.

Portage was never "promised" that every invocation will correctly take you to the intended result, In fact as we all know emerge usually will take several round before it will settle down to a execution plan. Hm, I don't know that much about framebuffers in the linux kernel but usually it's ok to enable stuff
while not using it.
I would try to enable everything that could be missing. Then when the kernel is working, you can remove the things you don't need.
Keep your current kernel as backup in case you ...

, but I'd like to note that declarative configuration doesn't imply isolation per-packages or becoming fully nix-like.

for patch in data['apply-etc-patches']
extract patch // I guess patches are provided within this json file as well

Yes, something simple like this is probably good to test things out.
The patches I thought would be in something like
"/etc/system-declaration.d/patches"
or
"/etc/sys-dec.d"
Let ...

It shouldn't interfere with this or do big directional changes(I know this sounds a bit questionable but how do I know without evaluating it).
Maybe it's good to consider this feature.

With supergrub2, It looks like you try to use the boot partition as root partition.
the kernel loads from the boot partition but then you need to tell grub where /init is
usually on the /root partition

Easiest would be to boot from the hdd and then install a full grub on the new disk, can be done ...

What would be needed to make gentoo work like Guix/Nix ?

I love Gentoo and I thought about whether it would be possible to
add this "functional package management" feature to Gentoo.

I mean basically if you make some system declaration
(I'd love to have it in python) which defines a diff to "/etc"
and then recreate a "/root" somewhere every time you ...
