Solution: the -no-pie CFLAG. The kernel is hardened on this machine (whoops).

This is an issue I can't reproduce on Debian but is present in the latest stable and unstable versions of sys-devel/gdb (7.12.1 and 8.0.1 respectively). You can use the 'generate-core-file' (or 'gcore') command inside ...
