a lot of the documentation is based upon redhat and mandrake... there's only a few instructions for gentoo on mythtv.org... so in order to install the ivtv driver... would I have to write an ebuild for the ivtv tarball? If so then how would I go about doing it? or can I just follow the redhat ...

http://ivtv.sf.net/ and http://www.mythtv.org/ both have a lot of documentation for the PVR's

You just need a floppy with a bootsector in that case.

Just change (in lilo.conf)

boot=/dev/hda

to

boot=/dev/fd0

Then, run lilo. Revert back to your previous lilo configuration afterwards.
