That's my opinion too. As far as I know can run everything on my desktop without any major gnome-things.

But thanks, you made me take a second look. Tried a quick fix and temporarily removed first Banshee, then Spotify, after reading here:

The following keyword changes are necessary to proceed ...

Remove gnome, refuse to use systemd (udev blocking)

Ok, I am aware that this is a recurring subject on these forums, but I can not get a decent solution out of what I have read so far. Either there is no obvious solution, or people tend to surrender to systemd. I've got nothing against systemd, I just do not want it at this time.

I use Xfce, but I ...

Got the same problems, actually managed to avoid them by:

1. emerging qtwebkit without icu flag.

2. added icu to make.conf

3. emerge chromium with all the other dependencies.

Now I can enjoy this godforsaken browser until we get a proper opera again ;)

They have now released the open beta client. Downloading TF2 now... I could do unspeakable things to Gabe Newell and his crew for this shit.

Toffer ,

Did you restart X or/and re-log the user after installing the fonts? (New log-in probably isn't necessary, but that's what I did after installing the fonts, thus getting rid of that error. Perhaps env-update would have been enough? I forget.)

I thought I did, most appearantly not then ...

I started fresh (x86) and followed the wiki as it was 15 minutes ago, all listed dependies into place, but still stuck with what I believe is the font problem?

ILocalize::AddFile() failed to load file "public/steambootstrapper_english.txt".

Apparently launching with 'steam steam://open/friends' will make it work, even if you're not in the beta.

Will give it a shot when I get home.

Someone said they are working on that bug as we speak.

But it don't seem to work for everybody... Well, it being a bug, my guess is that it's just ...

Python breakdown

Sorry for the blurry subject. I'v somewhat killed python in my environment, or atleast hurt it.

It began with Deluge suddenly wouldn't start, and output som errors about python modules. (I can't remember if I did any changes, but it's of course likely.)
Having no or less clue, i began messing with ...

Apologies to the crowd, I screwed up on this one.

All of the 10-15 times times I tried to recompile the kernel and reboot, i did'nt mount the /boot partition, resulting in of course: the new kernel-config was never used.

I used the kernel-install-howto from the Gentoo install docs, where ...

Thank you WakkaDojo, for taking the time!

Well, the first steps in your post wich you describes as "junk", is completed. I copy the kernelimage everytime i recompile, and my grub.conf is correct.

I have also tried to remove firmware and re-emerge, with no result.

The trouble loading firmware 2 is ...

Yep, I've emerged the 3.0 firmware.

And I've also gone through the gentoo-wiki more times than I can count. :?
But I'll do it again!

I'm in the beginning-phase of linux, so i thought there might be some obvious commands i've missed?

IPW2200 - Unable to load firmware (solved)

Hi, first time user of the forums, so please be patient. Thank you in advance for all help, and also a very helpful forum.

I have Gentoo 2.6.22-gentoo-r9, and my udev v. seems to be 115.

When I run dmesg | grep ipw2200 , I get the following:

ipw2200: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200/2915 Network ...
