Also try without kdm (use startx) as well. And verify whether it's not X11 driver issue as those are often the case as well.

I'm installing Gentoo on a Lenovo X61 Tablet. So far everything has been proceeding without a hitch, but right when it comes to starting X, I'm stumped. I've configured /etc/conf.d/xdm to use KDM for login.

It seems to start ok, the login screen appears but right after I enter the username ...

For a while now I have noticed this utterly baffling behaviour during emerges. While compiling the ebuild, the entire process just.. stops every now and then. Not for every package and not necessarily twice for the same package.. and even if it does, it will most probably happen in a different place ...

The problem is reoccurring but inconsistent, even when the software is the same. You also said the laptop is ancient. Would this be a faulty hardware issue then, related to the power somehow?
