I have overcome the problem I had by only updating python reliant programs which use python3_12, since the problem seems
to lie with python3_11 usage. As Gentoo is in process of updating to python3_11, then presumably other python dependent programs
will update as the revision proceeds.

I mention ...

Thank you Sam_. What you have written might have ended my questioning had it been said initially in answer to my original question.
Anyway, at least I have learned, (elswhere I regret), what a 'wheel name is, what it does, and how to set it.
I must also state that I had no original intention to be ...

I will just answer the last entry. I have always cleaned up my own mess: and in this case I didn't
ask for help, or report a bug. I asked for information on python so I could better research on what might
be happening. I was then informed that the problem on my computer was not related to the ...

I didn't put any 'pqv' result up with the 'info' I posted earlier since it was 'history' by the time it was asked for, as I had
later made many more attempts at a satisfactory merge and it would not have been available: -- I had saved the info data.

**********Edit made later after posting ***********
On reading through the 'info file' after posting I noticed that it contains -python3_11 . That should not
have been so, and python3_11 is enabled in my package.use file. That must have been kept from when I had only python3_12 enabled ...

I think I have tried every possible configuration including '-uDU @world' but always get a breakage or 'no wheel name returned' for my pains. I have gained some information on 'python wheel name', but it seems to require a complicated formation including data I don't have. I assume that normally it ...

a couple of items set in ...

My apologies for this late response to your entry, but I did not get the usual email notification that
there had been an entry to my query.

Yes, the problem seems to have been that I had set my kernel to load the firmware. this was necessary
in the past, but it seems not now to be required ...

Ports clash: access to localhost refused

I have read up quite a bit now on the subject of web-servers, and realised it can be quite complex. This resulted in my removal and masking of nginx. I found it appeared to make no difference to the use of my installed system. I had not conciously installed it; it just came as part of a routine ...

Ports clash: access to localhost refused

Various updates have led to an installation of both apache2 and nginx on my computer. The result is a clash between webservers apache2 and nginx. Both want to listen on localhost and the end result is that cups can no longer access localhost, and systemd cannot load apache2.

I do not have much ...

I do most system management on a text screen console, and am constantly plagued
by the appearance of a firmware loading message for dvb-demod-si2168-b40-01.fw,
which is needed for my tv usbstick. I do not understand why this firmware should need to
be reloaded regularly every few seconds. I have ...

Yes. I aplogise for that. I thought it might be related to app-alternatives, which I haven't got my head around yet, since
the later binutils was installed at the same time. It was after this update that I found merges were failing in their inability to
find "/usr/bin/as".This view was reinforced ...

I am posting here since I cannot find any other topic relating to my problem with symlinks and app-alternatives.

the news item.

sys-devel/binutils was also updated from verison 2.8 to 2.9 ...

The problem seems to have been of my own making. the merges were failing because of
an error in my make.conf file. I had unwittingly opened up an old setting for LD_FLAGS.
Hopefully my previous post can be removed to avoid any misunderstandings?

created. Profile registered as "systemd/merged-user". BUT ..... I can no longer "emerge" anything. I just get 'econf failed'
and "emake failed" messages. Otherwise the machine ...

I saw an earlier post on the [bug=724314]bugzilla 724314[/bug] reports which suggested using vtv,pgo and lto flags in the gcc compilation.
I did this and boost-1.76.0-r1 compiled OK. I give my results on the buzilla reports.

I am using gcc-10.3.0 and kernel-5.12.9-zen1.
It seems the pgo and lto ...

Yes! I just checked in Bugzilla and returned here to notify that I had found the bug listed.
I didn't want to go there first, since I wanted to be sure I hadn't done something stupid
in my settings first.

Many thanks anyway for pointing out the bug.

I think this is related to this issue. The upgrade to python9 has meant considerable changes and emerges. One of which is the requirement of changed uses to dev-libs/boost-1.75.0-r2. This compiled without problems on an older AMD processor and an Intel processor, but it will not compile on my Ryzen ...

Many thanks Neddy. But I have just found the solution. After I wrote the above I loaded up an Ubuntu live dvd to

I think I have found the reason for the failure of these sticks with later kernels. The output of the "modinfo" command on dvb_usb_cxusb
produces a list of aliases which, amongst various info and mumbo jumbo is meaningless to me, but probably not to the more enlightened,
includes the idVendor and ...
