Mysterious problem emerging x11-libs/qt-3.3.3 at Stage1

Okay, so I got the big 2004.3 x86 cd and started building a Stage 1 install...

I'm near the end of the Stage 1 install process. Had a few hiccups here and there on emerges but they seemed to resolve once I redid them. Got most of the way through bootstrap.sh.

(My Athon t-bird 1.3 seemed fast a ...

Can you glean any useful information from this?
cat /proc/interrupts

I'm not sure - it doesn't say anything about a soundcard. Neither does lspci or catting /proc/pci. Maybe VMware is torturing me?

I suppose I could try the OSS route, but if VMware isn't providing a detectable soundcard ...

I've been using VMware 3.x. Some places in the documentation, it claims to emulate "Soundblaster" (seemingly implying sb8) whereas sometimes it claims SB 16. Neither works for me in Linux.

I don't know much about VMware 4.x.

Problem still unsolved.

Quick update - I put in a plain hard drive and got a reasonable Gentoo system up and running (multiboot w/ Win98 for kicks). Then I tried again with the RAID setup in another vain attempt to resurrect my old data. Yet again, the strange "/dev/md0p1" thing is still reported by fdisk but still cannot ...

I have a KT3 Ultra mother board with a ATA133 RAID.
I have bought a maxtor HDD 40Go ATA133 and I have connected it to the first connector of the RAID controller.
Then I have activated the RAID in the BIOS.

First of all, RAID requires at least two hard drives, and they should be the same brand ...

ALSA on vmware: Doesn't recognize sb16?

Hey y'all, I've got a problem:

I've got a reasonable (though minimal) Gentoo system up and running on vmware on my laptop. One problem, though, is that I've not been able to get sound working.

At first, I thought (from some of the VMWare docs) that it emulates a plain, old, original SoundBlaster ...

partial success?

Alright, so between this helpful post and a few other webpages (see below), I was able to get these drives recognized by Linux as /dev/md0, and ``fdisk -l /dev/md0'' even was happy to report the existence of the vfat and ntfs partitions on the array! Woohoo Linux!

Now, maybe because I'm doing this ...

Mick_bravo, what exactly did you have to install again? Do you mean your entire system? Or do you mean that you also had to change your PORTDIR before emerging ttmkfdir? It seems to me that doing so could be dangerous (making it difficult for Portage to figure out what the dependencies are ...

I'm so glad to hear that others have run into my problems with ttmkfdir - but sad to say that the solution doesn't work for me. :-(

Due to the painful disk requirements of gentoo with X, I have been scrounging space wherever I can - which translates into separate partitions for /usr/portage, /var ...

Use software raid to resurrect hardware raid?

I have a pair of nice IBM drives that I was using as hardware RAID 0 with my motherboard's mostly-unsupported raid chip, back when I was using Windows. Unfortuntely they seem to have been corrupted and Windows won't boot.

I'm not sure if the hardware's bad, but I was wondering, if I set the stripe ...

Never mind - I realized afterwards that I had to chown -R the /home/myusername directory. Odd that su dies without ownership of the home dir.

still not a player

I tried out the helpful hints in this thread, and it worked fine - with a hitch.

I got my system up and running with Gentoo by preserving my /home filesystem (with just myself as the primary user) and wiping out the / and other filesystems. I got KDE up as root (took a lonnnng time) and then I ...

Does anybody have an idea what "scsi controller" is used by a VMWare virtual machine? And what driver may support it?

Yes, I compiled devfs into the kernel, and I did compile reiserfs and ext3 support. I guess I will recheck my kernel config and recompile to make sure, but I was pretty careful to do these things.

Kernel doesn't recognize root= parameter?

Can anyone help me out?

I just finished building my first Gentoo system (from Stage 1) but it doesn't seem to boot in a satisfactory way.

The kernel boot nice and fast, up until it complains about being unable to load up my root partition at sda3. (I use VMWare virtual disk, so it appears as a ...
