Thanks, Carlo and iphands. I feel kind of dumb about not getting what Carlo pointed out about kdm already being installed, but still I was able to use iphand's answer to solve an unrelated portage issue.

I've had a gentoo system up and running for two weeks and have been able to solve about every problem, but the beryl-whitescreen issue--which isn't important--and a similar important issue about emergeing kdm. The response to emerge kdm -pv:

Also, I having other problems related to libssl.so.0.9.7 besides not being able to emerge.

I tried the FETCHCOMMAND command and I'm still having problems.
My machine appears to be trying to download wget-1.10.2.tar.gz at every gentoo mirror, but it now claims that /usr/bin/wget doesn't exist.

It is in fact correct.

emerge broken

Whenever I try to emerge any program, I get this error message
/usr/bin/wget: error while loading shared libraries: libssl.so.0.9.7: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

but

emerge program -p

works fine.

I have my suspicions about what happened. I'm new to Gentoo and ...

I'd like to use your small install on a Gigabyte 965P-S3 motherboard. Everything seems to work, but it doesn't detect Eth0. It's a Marvell 88E8056.

I'm pretty much a newbie to Linux, so don't be annoyed if I don't understand any reply at first.
