top lines of package.use/ files causing errors?

This isn't a showstopper, but has been really bugging me lately.

My package.use is a directory containing multiple files for easy sortability, has been for a decade or so with no issue, and they all have the same permissions:

# ls -la /etc/portage/package.use/
total 28
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 124 ...

OK, well I'm fairly sure it's just proper crashing, not just screen freezing. At least, the network isn't working and I can't ssh into it either from anywhere.
And I'm also fairly certain that it's not a kernel-version either.
So far this morning I've tried 5.9.9 (latest~) and 5.4.72 (latest stable ...

Ryzen vs UEFI/GPT, OpenRC issue maybe? (hanging on boot)

OK, so up until last night I had a perfectly working system that I installed a year or two ago, on a Ryzen 2600, AMD X470, SataSSD. But somewhere in between 'I haven't emerged for 109 days', 'python2 is EOL', 'profile 17.0 is deprecated', and a thousand blocking packages, I managed to completely ...

well yes, I know I'm doing --emptytree
I want to rebuild the entire thing.
1 First I want to rebuild basic tools like gcc/portage, that's done.
2 Next I want to rebuild the rest of the basic system, sys-*/* and dev-python/* packages and whatnot
3 Only once that is complete do I want to even think ...

@world vs @system

I'm sure this has been asked before but I can't find anything (trying to search on oft-used words such as 'world' and 'system' is a recipe for thousands of irrelephant results).

What (or who) controls what goes in the '@system' list?
(and more to the point, where is it?)

The long story is, I'm ...

How to install ffplay from ffmpeg package?

So I'm trying to follow this: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/FFmpeg_-_Extract_Blu-Ray_Audio except for DVD-Audio because I bought an album on dvd and not cd.

Except that I don't have ffplay, even though I've got ffmpeg installed:

Just found that glmark2 benchmark is part of the x11 overlay.
I was actually expecting it to be in app-benchmarks :(
Well, I built and installed it with these USE flags:
app-benchmarks/glmark2-2014.03::x11 USE="X opengl -drm -gles2 -wayland"

and ran the executable in windowed mode:
user ...

So: it's not a kernel-module vs inbuilt thihng. It's not a permissions thing (unless root is also not allowed to use the card).
Just on the permissions, currently I've got

As you are using make -j10 spotting the fist error in the log, the only one we care about, is difficult,
you need make -j1, for that.
I always thought that make -jx was related to the number of threads to simultaneously compile, ie number of cores in my cpu. I've got 6 cores, so I added another ...

I just picked a few huge packages at random for comparison, and there's really much of a muchness between them.
Firstly gcc 4.8.4 seems a lot faster than 4.8.3, with 4.7.3-r1 in between:

* sys-devel/gcc

Dr Croubie,

If you keep the emotion out your your posts the technical issues will be easier to comprehend for your helpers.

You can build the radeon driver in two ways. Build into your kernel on as a module.
When you build it into your kernel, the firmware must be in kernel too.
As a module, the ...

I have no freaking clue what's going on, still. Something's happening, and yet nothing's happening.

I go to my kernel, make a new one WITHOUT the radeon firmware blobs.

CONFIG_FIRMWARE_IN_KERNEL=y
CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE ...

OK, well that was a waste of a day (and a waste of half an hour writing a response that got lost, so writing it again).

had a look at your older posts. looks to me as if you are not including the
newer firmware for the 250X. IIRC it was about including radeon/VERDE_mc2.bin
that made the difference.
