Thanks. I'll look into them. Never tried either one. I've used Ubuntu heavily, but didn't know they had a rescue distro. Or are you just talking about their livecd?

Don't particularly want a GUI, but from the googling I've done I think I might be stuck with it now.

I've pondered a long while that ...

Full featured boot image with support for LVM and RAID?

Hi,

I just downloaded the System Rescue CD and it sucks. Likewise with Ultimate Boot CD.

The reason I'm putting it here is because I like to use those images to install pretty much any distro from. I'm interested in another Gentoo box right now, and I'm looking around for a "rescue cd" image, but ...

You can read them at that link. Provided your install is post GLEP42, portage will warn when you are affected by a news item.
Like so many of your posts, this one is truly helpful.

Thanks.

Mostly, the big events are general knowledge on the forums because they caused notable numbers of less experienced users to turn up seeking help, or are remembered because they were painful even for experienced users. As for how to pick the right points in history, the easiest solution is to ...

How do I go about upgrading an old gentoo box?

Hi,

I'm not asking for specific help with my system, although I have a system I'm describing that I want to upgrade. I'd like guidance but I want to do the actual work myself.

Every so often somebody (it has been me) will post a question about a system that's been turned off for 6 months or so ...

It's loaded the same way it was when it was new. It was sized to provide 30 minutes of battery power. All the equipment hooked to the supply was bought at the same time as I bought the supply.

Then the original battery has simply died. Happens after a several years, I had the same just not with ...

My marine battery won't take a charge. I bought an OEM battery for the second UPS. So the entire thread is for nothing.

Thanks anyway guys, sorry for wasting your time. Maybe I'll try it next time.

I decided to only experiment with one UPS at this time. The bigger one I decided to go the OEM route. It's back up with fresh batteries in it.

My other one is going to inherit a boat trolling motor battery I have sitting in my garage. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

how heavily are you loading the UPS? if it shuts off in 2 seconds it might be something with the UPS not liking active PFC power supplies (or rather the supplies not liking the voltage the UPS is putting out)... long story short, the UPS thinks nothing is attached and it shuts off when the power ...

Thanks.

I see a bunch of blogs about this (instructables etc) but an enthusiastic blogger is usually only enthusiastic about blogging until the project is built, not so much after the thing went dead. So you get all sorts of hurray! but don't find out about the end-of-life scenario.

This is ...

Smart UPS hacking with larger batteries -- Canceled

Hi,

I want to know about real-life pitfalls of attaching oversized batteries to a UPS. I'm looking for somebody who tried it at least once, and has real-world input as to the expected result. I can come up with all sorts of theoretical reasons why it MIGHT be a good or bad idea.

Please bear with ...

This is actually a dual boot system, or is it a VM and a guest?
Why NTFS? You have 2 Linux operating systems, and you're using an alien filesystem as an intermediate. NTFS support is still not as good as a Linux-native filesystem when all the "owners" are Linux.

Well, if you're going to be that specific about it, sftp is less secure than scp and will be phased out at some point soon.

The issue is that the sftp command doesn't verify the name of the file being transferred, so a hostile server can compromise the client system. Do you have a source for this ...

I see a lot of ftp:// in distro mirrors..
But maybe everyone is right.
Ftp is obsolete.....
BUT for the shake of argument would

force_local_logins_ssl=YES

enforce also logins to be encrypted?
:)

Distro mirrors are unauthenticated and likely hosted on a public cloud somewhere.

In my opinion ...

sftp client (or scp which is the same thing) Actually they aren't. The protocols differ, even though they both use ssh transport.
You can't scp files to a server with a force-command sftp-server.

Not a big difference from the end-user's perspective, but it can result in a "wtf is wrong with this ...

Anyway, sftp seems to be the way to go for you. It can use a regular SSH, or you can even force-command sftp server (so nobody would be able to run any other command than file sharing stuff on that account), and whatever client you like. There is sftp ...

Neddy,

Not important. I actually didn't expect anyone to do all this to satisfy my curiosity, I only asked in case anyone else was also curious.

I did the compile on my B+ and got 10+ hours for the first compile. So even though the kernel is significantly different now, I know that the pi4 could ...

Interesting.

This kind of suggests that a pi4, especially when it gets more stable, is a reasonable Gentoo platform, at least for a minimalist system. If this test alone were enough to form an opinion, then a pi4 is 10x as fast as a B+.

Just for the record, a B+ running Gentoo spends all its time ...

Why would anyone build a kernel on the Pi, as its one of the most cross compile friendly packages out there.
64-bit.
  1. Because they can.
  2. Because it's the most common package on any Linux system
  3. Because it can be used as a standard benchmark.

I'm curious how long it takes to compile the kernel, first time (clean) on the pi itself?

Back when I did a pi b+ it was about 10 hours, maybe a little more.

A hypervisor is software that you load onto your hard disk/ssd/other storage device. It's a bare-bones operating system which provides the minimum functionality to host virtual machines. VMware ESXi is an example. Xen is another. KVM could be one depending on how minimal your basic Linux install is ...
