I think this is a wise decision. Although I'm not an expert in gentoo, I feel quite comfortable using the minimum stage.

I personally believes having "guides to create" may be more useful than the Live CD and stage3 product itself. Nevertheless, if we teach more people to create (or there are more ...

Finally a simple thing that really increases the cooperation in the general Gentoo user family!

That said I'm looking forward to installing back Gentoo when 2008.0 is out :D

I'm not sure, I don't run amd64 Gentoo currently. But I'm going to try to help anyway.

I have made the changes as per this guide, but am still unable to install the sun-jdk-1.4.13 package.

emerge spits out the following error message

These are the packages that would be ...

There's always the possibility to boot your laptop off the Windows XP CD-ROM and choose "Recovery Console" (IIRC). Then you "log on" to the existing Windows installation in text mode and have access to the limited (sic!) command interpreter. Then you issue "fixmbr" command which reinstalls Windows ...

Re: Gentoo - advantages of use ???

You're installing gentoo on a sparc, right?
You'll probably find an x86 install to be a little less painfull to set up

Yep. On a sparc. Complete nightmare....
Gentoo on sparc used to be very problematic around two years ago. It should be better now (newer kernel, better X, etc.) but I ...

BTW. Maybe you could politely add [SOLVED] to the title of your first post? Thx

Just a rough idea: check the /var/log/messages - maybe there are some clues (esp. at the end of this file).

And another one: maybe your system loads the ATI driver (built as a module I suppose) and that's the reason of this strange hangup? Maybe try unmerging this driver?

I use a system-wide pl_PL.UTF-8 encoding. However, most manual pages that have Polish versions are in the 8-bit ISO-8859-2 encoding. In the end I came up with this setup:
NROFF /usr/bin/nroff -Tlatin1 -c -mandoc -p
COL /usr/bin/iconv -f iso-8859-2 -t utf-8
This effectively tells man not to clobber ...

After a substantial toolchain update ( tcupdate.sh -p -t ; tcupdate.sh -t ) all that's left is to do emerge -avuD world and use revdep-rebuild to get rid of problematic packages.

Of course, a really big gcc update (3.4 ...

As a plan B I'd recommend putting /home on a separate partition. Three reasons:
Easier backups (both system and users' data).
Can be handy if you ever need to replace one Linux distro in favor of another one.
It's definitely handy when you have several Linux distros installed on the same machine ...

/dev/hda2: 63-758, 696 Cylinders total.
/dev/hda3: 759-789, 31 Cylinders total.

I read carefully once again your first post and I'd like to ask you for more information.
You've stated that when you install *only* Windows 98 onto the hard drive, and you run it in a "normal" way you get:
Disk I/O error. Replace Disk and press any key to continue...
Is this correct?
Then you ...

Then why Gentoo?

It`s the distro I`m knowing the best and therefore I tought I can make the best system out of it. What else do you think is suitable? (I hate Suse)

My experience shows that until you have something extraordinary in your system (ACLs, selinux, hardened setup) it's fairly easy to do a stage4 backup of any directory just by using tar:
# cd directory_to_backup; tar -cvpzf /some_path/archive.tar.gz .
The most important is the "-p" switch for tar ...

Might be some problem with the baselayout package. IIRC I've got something similar a while ago, but now it's okay. What version of baselayout do you have?
