Sorry to post in a closed post but I have the same problem. I use XDM as login manager. My problem is a I have neither of the two files below:

If you use xdm to log in, use a file called ~/.xsession instead of .xinitrc


Any tips would be great. Oh, btw, i am a real beginner.

I have the same prob. I assume what he means is just sync your kernel..?? I am completely new to linux... What is the command after you select I2C option to start the update?

EDIT:

would it be

emerge --update --deep --newuse world

???

OMG, all it was was the mouse to mice... You are my hero mate...hahaha. Do you mind telling me the difference that that made now? Changing from mouse to mice? Oh, I just set the protocol to auto.

Okay folks, I'm back again... After endless trial and error I have yet to get my mouse to work if I use xorg.conf. I have now gotten it to boot into gdm without error. Here is the prob though, I just see the cursor but can't move it. Here is the section I have under Input Device:

Hi folks, well, I got fluxbox running now. Even managed to install Firefox. :D

My problem is this though, when GDM boots up, it uses the wrong keymap. I have a Dell 105 key, Swiss keyboard. In the console I set keymap to de_CH which seems to work fine but at login manager it is US. After some ...

Installed gentoo, now trouble installing FluxBox [SOLVED]

I folks, i'm new to linux and all and I have now attempted to installed gentoo and fluxbox. Gentoo install went great with almost no setbacks. Now I am following the The Fluxbox Configuration HOWTO guide from gentoo.org to install and configure fluxbox. So now I have done the following:

Hi folks, new to linux and was wondering what the "\" does in the command below. I'm installing fluxbox on gentoo btw.

I got an old AMD Athlon 1GHz next to that machine...but currently running win2k3 and acting as my dhcp, proxy, ftp, etc... :D I'm still a poor student, once I have the money and I get used to Linux i'll build another good computer to install linux on...oh, I'm gentoo is compiling kernel now. :D

hehe...I tried kde yesterday... that's when I decided to post and ask some questions....i'm just running on a old p3 800mhz with 386mb of ram :D

think I'll try to jump into fluxbox right away...perhaps a big mistake but i'm up for a challenge

wow thanks for the quick responses. I must admitt, I am a windows user.

So in theory, one can get fluxbox to look like a desktop though right? Another question, do I need a login manager if i were to install KDE or fluxbox? Any recommendations on desktops if I don't go with fluxbox?

Installing Fluxbox in Gentoo

Hi folks, I'm really new to linux and well, I have been trying out a few things but I am a bit confused with what gentoo is, what X-session is, and then what KDE, fluxbox, gnome, etc are.

I understand that I need the basic linux kernel insalled, ie gentoo? With that, X is installed..correct? Now do ...

I hope I'm not out of line by posting here, but when I type:

# ls -FGg /etc/make.profile

I get:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 48 Apr 8 18:51 /etc/make.profile -> ../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/

without the 2006.... Did I do something wrong? if I try to navigate to that directory it also says it does ...
