I think I have discovered the culprit of this behavior. The same problem has been observed on my friend's computer who is running a similar but still different configuration. The common part is the X-Server 1.6 and Intel driver 2.7. If one looks at X in the process table when that happens he'll see ...

Couple of things.

Have you tried a memtest? Not 100% reliable, but it may throw some light on a potential issue with your RAM.

Also, have you double checked your high memory settings in the kernel?

Cheers,
jcat

I'll run the memtest just to be sure.

What is it exactly about the high memory ...

Interesting observations - when this occurs some kind of memory corruption takes place, which is noticeable by strange fonts in applications. For example, in Firefox I get gibberish fonts. Also, restarting X helps.

Perhaps this is a more related X-related issue?

what does

cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness

show?

I usually set mine at 1 if I have more than 2GB of ram... mileage may vary so try some adjustments and see what works best.

You can specify your swapiness level in you /etc/sysctl.conf

just append

#Configure Swappiness
vm.swappiness = 5

to ...

Right. As an experiment I'll turn off the swap to see if the problem remains. It slows down to a standstill, sometimes I can see the last moments see conky which shows load average of 16 (!). The last time I was using NetBeans when that happened.

[SOLVED] Extensive swappiness even when RAM is unutilized

Before I ask the question I must say that I have crawled all of the forums and resources I could but there is no reasonable explanation for what is happening with my machine.

I have 2G of RAM and 2G of swap. The problem is that swap gets used even if RAM is not filled up. For example, only 700 ...

The problem turned out to be related to old files from the install having root privileges. Now, the problem is a bit different. The setup.py that is supplied with the application makes a call to a /usr/bin/calibre_postinstall but the problem is that at that point portage does not yet copy all the ...

Great, thank you for pointing out  . It almost works now. Actually I have just dropped previously used functions from the ebuild, though only one issue remains:

Need help on making an ebuild for a python app

Hello, I am trying to make an ebuild for calibre book management software. So far, I have this:

# $Header: /var/cvsroot/gentoo-x86/app-text/calibre/calibre-0.4.77.ebuild,v 1.1 2008/07/17 01 ...

Tried. Does not help. What I have noticed though that in .config/vlc/vlcrc the following line always stays commented, even if I try to modify it myself:

Code: Select all

[SOLVED]vlc 0.9.8a video does not integrate in the interface

Basically, the subj. I cannot make vlc to play video in the same window as the controls - it always opens a new one even though I have set "Integrate video in interface" option on. I have searched on this topic but all of the discussions apply to much older versions. Here are my use flags for vlc ...

1. Well, there is an ebuild already which is way too outdated and I understand why - is not worth it at this point since it's updated almost every week.

2. Isn't it possible to install it in the same path but somehow notify python that it is not an "orphan" and pretty much welcomed on this system ...

[SOLVED]Gentoo always purging my custom python applications

I am using few applications outside of portage. One of such applications is calibre, I install it by issuing:

wget -O- http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net/downloads/calibre-0.4.141.tar.gz | tar xvz
cd calibre*
sudo python setup.py build && sudo python setup.py install

Missing khelpcenter service in a non-KDE environment (XFCE)

I am using XFCE4 but I do use some of the KDE/Qt applications. When trying to view the documentation for such an app the program usually says "khelpcenter service is not available". What should be done in order to get khelpcenter working? Just emerging khelpcenter does not help, the documentation ...

Xorg 1.5/Intel 2.5 causing full-screen apps to lock out X

I have recently upgraded to Intel video drivers 2.5 and Xorg server version 1.5 mostly because I need EXA so that I can watch movies while running compiz (since XVideo cannot work simultaneously with compiz using XAA). The problem is that any application when switched to a full-screen mode cause the ...

I have always successfully used ivman for all my automounting needs but on a recent installation I stumbled upon a problem.

It seems that the problem is in pmount:

[solved] Problems with NX library being broken

After certain updates when I do a 'revdep-rebuild' I get this line of output:

broken /usr/libexec/cups/backend/nxipp (requires libgnutls.so.13) done.

However, the 'revdep-rebuild' does not re-emerge any of the packages. I have tried to re-emerge all NX-related packages manually but it did not ...

Yes, it works. Do not forget to re-emerge all xf86 drivers after the update and then to do "eselect opengl set ati" to ensure that ATI OpenGL implementation is used. Also, I am quite sure that the latest ebuild fetches 8.02, but it DOES NOT! Look in its source - it downloads 8.01 instead!
