this may be a redundant question ... but could I (in theory) maybe use a a prebuilt binutils for the x86_64 to fix myself?

I just tried that while waiting for a reply and I got the same issue ... I did use the AMD64 LiveCD to install the system.

raven: I had the same kind of problem. Use the Smart Boot Manager floppy. That thing works wonders. I'll see if I can get a link for you, but you can find the thing everywhere, because it will fix just about anything related to booting from CD. Most linux distro sites mirror it.

I have a Pentium Pro 200/MMX box. with a very stupid propriatary cdrom boot-loader, it won't boot any Boot-CD I have, especially Gentoo which is what I want to run on this box. Is there a Boot-Disk HOWTO for booting to the Gentoo LiveCD?
