Just to take care of the simple possibilities -- did you:
1) Re-emerge virtualbox-modules after upgrading your kernel?
2) Make sure to update your /usr/src/linux symlink to point to the correct kernel source tree (e.g., /usr/src/linux-2.6.37-gentoo) and then repeat step 1?

Read the whole file into a single vector, memory map it, or implement windowing so that the file is not fully loaded at any one time. One question one request.
