Topic: Both Firefox and Sea Monkey crashing after last update

Same behavior

I am getting the same behavior with both Firefox and Opera. I can't tell exactly what it is related to - sometimes the browser(s) just go "poof" and they are gone, other times it's when I am viewing a video on youtube or something and they just disappear. Quite annoying. Can't remember if Seamonkey ...

Same issue

I had the same issue last night after I sync'd but just unmerged, com_err, ss and e2fsprogs then ran emerge -vuD world and all was well. It does appear as if com_err and ss go away. The system boots fine and e2fsprogs does it's thing. Blocks used to frustrate me but then I just started yanking the ...

Doesnt work for me that well.

CDs automount quite well (the icon it shows was somewhat awkward for a CD drive, though), but I can't get my usb sticks to work properly.
If I didn't like Gnome I think I'd have switched by now to xfce or kde. But I still hope there's a solution around?
Any other ...

Comment out any entry for the cdrom or usb stick you may have in /etc/fstab and let gnome-mount take care of them. It seems gnome only displays icons for the drives mounted under /media.

According to another thread, yes, this works, but if Gnome crashes and you must drop out of X, you will have ...

I'll try that, thanks for the tip. You could be right about not being able to mount if the DE crashes, but it's a simple matter to uncomment the line in fstab.

That's what I thought. I just looked up the mbox format (wikipedia) and if a blank line followed by a line with "From " should be taken as the beginning of the next message, the either there is a hidden character (not shown by emacs) or balsa is somehow getting confused. /var/mail/jack and /home ...

The good thing about Balsa is that the messages are stored in mbox format and can be read by any text editor. If you find the files representing your "lost" messages, you can save them. As for the other issue, it looks like a character set conversion issue to me, but I am not very experienced with ...

When I insert a CD, nothing happens, period, except for blank CDs showing on the desktop. When I click on the CD drive icon in "Computer", I get the "can't mount file" error. i'll try disabling gvm

Well, according to the 2.22 upgrade guide, gnome-volume-manager is still needed, but for things like cameras. So might want to re-enable it. I re-emerged gnome-volume-manager with the "-automount" flag but the only thing that automounts now is usb sticks. CDs still do not ...

I have the same problem. USB sticks mount fine and display on the desktop, but I disabled gnome-volume-manager in my session. CDs however, do not mount automatically at all. Balsa

Perhaps you can start Balsa from a terminal and when it crashes it may display the output in the terminal. I don't have an explanation for the lost messages though, sorry.

Well, an emerge --sync this morning brings in Gnome 2.22 but an emerge -uD world blocks some of the Gnome packages portage wants to pull in. Not sure what to do about this. Here are the blocks:

sargek, if you updated recently, specifically to python-2.5, and misguidedly (like me) removed python-2.4 before running python-updater, try:
python-updater -o 2.4

Apparently python-updater needs the/an(?) older version in place to work correctly if invoked without -o.

hope this helps someone ...

Had I read http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_Installing_Specific_Packages, I would have known this...as a side note, I ended up emerging a small qt application that depends on this qt version so when I run emerge --depclean, it doesn't try to rip qt out. I will try to do more research first next time..

Try emerge -av =x11-libs/qt-3*

That did it, thanks! This is my own fault, but the problem I am going to run into is that portage does not "see" any dependencies for qt because the binary I installed was done manually. I guess I could install a small application that depends on qt so portage is ...

Cannot emerge qt3, only qt4

My situation requires that I emerge qt3, not qt4, yet when I emerge qt I get qt4. I have an application (binary) I installed manually that requires qt3 (VirtualBox). I would install the VirtualBox version in portage, but it is different than the version from Sun and the usb functionality in the ...

NV driver after building with only nvidia driver

I built my box with the nvidia driver listed in /etc/make.conf:
