Why can't I su to root as a regular user? I tried looking through the different pam modules and tried editing /etc/suauth (see man su), but neither helped.

you need to add the user to the "wheel" group.

Only members of "wheel" can su to root.

Thanks. Is that in a configuration file somewhere, or hardcoded into the su program?

run moduser -G wheel <username>

you might wanna check man moduser cuz thats off the time of my head, I'm on a windoze box at work right now.

might actually be usermod instead of moduser. can't remember that either :)

or you could read the FAQ, or even possibly search the forums, there must be about 300 other threads the exact same as this.

Looks like this line:

in /etc/pam.d/su. BTW, your original question is covered in the FAQ.

just cd to /etc then nano group then add the name of your user to the wheel group.


simple as that.
