emerge unmerge
although gnome is just a stub for all its libraries so you should do a depclean after this to actually get ride of gnome, but why would you do such a horrible thing to a good little gnome like that? Why?

Good my son, now GNOME is sadly a bit hard to get completely rid of.'

editing your make.conf' USE flag settings to say -gtk -gtk2 -gnome and then

emerge unmerge gnome && emerge depclean should help you a bit...

so i followed Lovechild's directions and all went well, but now when i do an emerge world -p i get...
Code:
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies
*** Package in world file is not installed: gnome-base/gnome                    ...done!

if i take off the -p it appears to work as normal, but i'm wondering if it would cause problems in the future and how i might fix it.

I feel somewhat guilty to support such actions... but:
you still have gnome in your world-file.
Go edit "/var/cache/edb/world" and remove the line "gnome-base/gnome" there, then a deplclean might help you. :)
