Not wanting to be out done by those at t'other place (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=240032&highlight=), I thought we could try and arrange a meetup for those Gentoo users who are in/near Oxford, or anyone else who wants to come along.

I know there are a few Gentooers in Oxford, so hopefully some will want to come :)

Suggestions for a venue, and date/time would be appreciated (as long as you don't say Monday or anywhere in Summertown)

Would be nice if this could be made sticky, so that people don't start thinking that Cambridge is better than Oxford

And while I'm here, I maybe as well post this from the last OxLUG Announce message:

Quote:
Also, on Thursday, 11th Nov, there's:

A lively debate on the merits of Windows, Open Source and
the future of Operating Systems

"This house believes that the enthusiasm for Linux and Open Source
is a triumph of hope over reality"

For the motion:

* Paul Wood-Robinson, Technology Strategist, Microsoft
* Adrian Hillcoat, Director of Presales, CSG, HP Ltd

Against the motion:

* Malcolm Yates, Novell Alliances EMEA, SUSE Linux
* Paul Tempest-Mitchell, Data Centre Practice Manager, Sun

19:30 (Tea and Coffee from 19:00)
Computing Laboratory, Wolfson Building, Parks Road

Sounds a good plan, can't let that other place have all the fun can we?

As for place/time, sometime in the evening would probably be best.

BTW, does anyone know how to sync from mirror.ox.ac.uk?? can't get it to work.

I'm in Abingdon so I'd be up for it. It depends when and where of course.

EDIT: there's no longer anything happening on Wednesday, it's 8pm at Far From the Madding Crowd on Sunday 28th Nov

No real reason for it other than maybe more people will commit to coming if there's a set time and place

So far that's potentially 3 of us from this thread coming, and Ed (ecatmur) said he's like to come, and he knows another gentooer, so so far that's up to 5 of us. We're doing well

Do you know where Borders is (near Sainsbury's local)? well it's off a side street somewhere there (although you can get to it from the other side of the side street too, but I can't remember where that comes out)

Rubbish directions I know, but I've not been down that way for a while

Bah. Weekends, people, weekends! I can't make weeknights, it's a 500 mile round trip and I'd need to get back for 8:30am the following morning. No can do :(

I'm with robmoss on this one...

It's only a 50 mile round trip (I think), but I have to be at work at 6am on Thursday!

I didn't realise ed catmur was a gentooer. :)

I can make pretty much any time. I would appreciate someone poking me on IRC when a date is set, since I don't really check forums or email much atm.

EDIT: How about we go for Sunday afternoon of the same week (the 28th?)? Say at 3pm. Same venue (Far From the Madding Crowd) unless anyone has any better ideas...

If anyone wants my mobile number, PM/email me (david.morgan _at_ wadh.ox.ac.uk)

£12 adult return by coach. Takes about an hour and a half from Victoria. Here's the website: http://www.oxfordtube.com/on_and_off_london.php

Thanks to who ever it was that got this in the GWN (I forgot )

Though Rob was only a maybe last I heard, and I'm not 100% sure that Ed's coming (he said Sunday would be ok though), so we might get sued for false advertising.

If someone would like to give ferret a poke on irc it'd be appreciated, since I'm unable to connect to it (blocked ports that I don't have control over)

Now the only problem is recognising each other. I'll be the tall guy with long hair and glasses (but sadly not a beard any more), most probably wearing black jeans and either a suitably geeky tshirt or a grey hoodie...

There's nothing happening on Wednesday anymore, it's now moved to Sunday so that more people can make it (I've edited the post where I first mentioned Wednesday to hopefully prevent any more confusion).

And yes, anyone who wants to come it welcome, even you

Indeed. I'm still a maybe. I'm in Lancaster on Friday night, back in Bolton on Saturday morning, then Leeds on Saturday afternoon, and then I might (assuming I have enough energy/money/lack of hangover/other stuff left) be coming to Oxford for the day on Sunday.

If anyone's got a fluffy penguin of some sort I suggest they take it and put it on the table. Either that or we should all wear a patch lead for a belt :P

I'm always telling the kids,NEVER, meet, exchange telephone numbers, addresses etc. wth anyone you chat with online. But, as always, its a case of do as I say not as I do! Anyway I'm only breaking one rule. I'll be there fag (cigarette) in hand. Cokehabit, we'll probably have to go outside for a puff next year.
