ok. here is what is going on. i am using the gentoo-2.6.9-r1 kernel. i disabled alsa in my kernel, and then i proceeded install alsa the "old fashioned" way. i emerged the driver, then the utils, and edited my /etc/modules.d/alsa file for the appropriate driver (snd-via82xx, i have a asus a7v8x mobo with this chipset). this all went good. so i unmuted everything. this was the result:

Code:
bash-2.05b$ amixer set Master 100 unmute
Simple mixer control 'Master',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pswitch
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 31
Front Left: Playback 31 [100%] [on]
Front Right: Playback 31 [100%] [on]

Code:
bash-2.05b$ amixer set PCM 100 unmute
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pswitch
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 31
Front Left: Playback 31 [100%] [on]
Front Right: Playback 31 [100%] [on]

Code:
bash-2.05b$ amixer set Center 100 unmute
Simple mixer control 'Center',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined pswitch pswitch-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Limits: Playback 0 - 31
  Mono: Playback 31 [100%] [on]

Code:
bash-2.05b$ amixer set Surround 100 unmute
Simple mixer control 'Surround',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pswitch
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 31
Front Left: Playback 31 [100%] [on]
Front Right: Playback 31 [100%] [on]

however, i still have no sound when i play an audio file. also, if i restart my computer, all of my settings go away and everything is muted again, at 0%. does anyone know what is going on, and how i can fix this. thanks

ps, the reason why i disabled alsa in my kernel was becuase i could not find the via82xx module in the kernel. though i opted to download the "old fashioned" way, as with the pre-2.6 kernels.

also, i just realized that when rebooting my computer, when linux is shutting down i get the following:

Code:
Storing alsa mixer levels...
     unloading modules                 [!!]

those exclamation points can't be good, anyone w/ help? thanks.

The via82xx driver is there so i recomend reconfiguring the kernel and undoing the "old fashioned" alsa install. You should find it under

The one in bold should be m or * (i prefer modules)

Thealsasound rc-script should take care of the volume levels being saved but i think something is realy wrong with alsa!

I'm having the same problem with my soundblaster live card, I've set up gentoo on multiple machines and never had a problem with sound, so it looks like the maintainers have screwed something up, sound works fine on my laptop which I set up about a month ago when I first got it.

dmesg doesn't give me any errors, so I don't know what's going on.

ok, so i unmerged all of the alsa-utils, unmerged the driver, and tried to start from scratch. i compiled my kernel with alsa support and with support for my via 82xx sound card. i then re-emerged alsa-utils and edited /etc/modules.d/alsa. i reset the mixer levels. still having the same problems. when i start alsa i get an error saying the the module snd-seq could not be found. also, when i stop alsa i get

Code:

bash-2.05b# /etc/init.d/alsasound stop
 * WARNING:  you are stopping a boot service.
 * Unloading ALSA...
 * Storing ALSA Mixer Levels             [!!]
 * Unloading modules                          [ok]

this is really agrevating, and i have no idea whats going on. help would be great. thanks.

Thats really weir problem! The only thing i can suggest now is trying a plain vanilla kernel and see if it solves your problem.
