|
|
I have installed stage 3 gentoo 2004.2 I followed the handbook, installed kde3.2.2.
Now, the problem is in booting. For one boot it is amazingly fast just 12sec and I am in kde, And for another boot it takes 12 minutes to goto kde.
Can this be? But it is. For a reboot its high class and for another it is damn hell.
This keeps on commingl very frequently, say alternatively.
HELP ! I want the fast boot to be permenant. HELP !
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is my first install of gentoo, and it is 100 times better than Fedora

yzonesoft,
Do you do a clean shutdown every time or just pull the plug out?
If the system does not cleanly unmount the filesystems, it can take a long time to sort out the mess at start up. _________________ Regards,

It slows down prior to kde and prior to even filesystem check.
The only thing thats always boot at same speed is kernel, After which the problem starts. sometimes it continues superbly and sometimes just have to wait 50 & more seconds for every OK messege.
hope this helps to solve this wierd problem. _________________ http://yzonesoft.buildtolearn.net |

yzonesoft,
Does it do a fsck every boot?
Thats excessive. Every 30 boots or so is plenty. _________________ Regards,

I have installed kde,vixie cron and syslog-n as given in the handbook.
1st reboot))For the first booting is fast and within 12 sec it comes to kde login screen and another 7 sec for loading kde,
2nd reboot))Then when I restart it becomes slow and takes 6min to kde login screen, Now if I login to kde it takes long; before which i switch of the computer. If I shutdown the machine from login screen, it again takes a long time before which I would reboot the computer
Now, after the 2nd reboot it again boots as fast as first boot...this cycle repeats consistenly. _________________ http://yzonesoft.buildtolearn.net |

yzonesoft,
Can you post the /etc/fstab file please?
If you force a shutdown becuse you get impatient, the system will run fsck at the next start. You can also set how often fsck is run at startup in /etc/fstab. _________________ Regards,

yzonesoft,
I was wrong about the field names in /etc/fstab.
The check frequency must be in the filesystem somewhere
tune2fs looks like it may help, read
You may not be ablr to use it on mouted filesystems though. _________________ Regards,

I have verified the var/log/messeges for the fast booting and damn slow booting, the figures are same, So it is not a kernel problem... _________________ http://yzonesoft.buildtolearn.net |

I have found out whats causing the trouble, it is
syslog-ng and vixie-cron, I want to uninstall both, does
emerge unmerge package is enough or I have to configure any other files.
Thanks _________________ http://yzonesoft.buildtolearn.net |

I don't know the answer to the unmerge question (I am assuming unmerge will take care of it but don't take my word for it). I am just curious on how you found the problem. |

I always got these errror
* Service 'sysklogd' already provide 'logger'!;
* Not adding service 'syslog-ng'...
But I ignored it, because handbook recommended installing syslog-ng
Here is how I found...
I restarted the machine manually when a software is loaded(ie [ok] sign) to check at which point the next boot goes normally. After a few try, (when the init 3 run level starts) when syslog-ng loaded I rebooted and next boot went normally. Also I found whenever I "PROPERLY" shutdown the machine the next boot will be a heck. Probably those who would like to install kde(from stage 3 and packageCD) should not install syslog-ng.
I did a
# emerge unmerge yslog-ng
# rc-update del syslog-ng
# rc-update add sysklogd deffault
But still the above process repeats and I get a error messege
* Service 'sysklogd' already provide 'logger'!;
* Not adding service 'syslog-ng'... " I though I have removed it "
So I guess I have to configure start-up, but HOW?
Also while loading stuff at boot up linux logs it into /var/log/messeges. Whever it tries to log syslog-ng will make a mess.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So many times I thought of reinstalling gentoo, But I think why people say fixing troubles in linux is easy(Yep, they are correect), So I ought to go on fixing it. _________________ http://yzonesoft.buildtolearn.net |

that's actually a known bug in 2004.2. What you should do is:
Code: | emerge -C sysklogd && emerge -C syslog-ng |
remove both from rc-update, then re-emerge syslog-ng and add it to the default run level. The same thing happened to me, and doing the above fixed it. |

I removed both from from rc-update ad then emerged syslog-ng, added it to default run level, and same problem occurs.
$ emerge -C sysklogd ( I have already removed syslog-ng)
.....
$emerge syslog-ng
.....
$ rc-update add syslog-ng defualt
$ adding syslog-ng to run level
$ service sysklogd already provide logger
$ Not adding service to syslog-ng
Also on the reboot, I get adding syslog-ng to run level, service sysklogd already provide logger; while entering init level 3 I get the messege
syslogd and klogd cannot load.... _________________ http://yzonesoft.buildtolearn.net |

I referred to the bug report and i removed the sysklogd file. Now I dont get any such messege like service sysklogd already provide logger, Not adding service to syslog-ng.
But reffering to my problem, I still have fast and slow boot alternatively.

I tried uninstalling vixie-cron; it didnt help. But a few more research and I have found something usefull,
When I shutdown the system;
Switching to run level 0
sending all process the term signal
-> When I reboot here, the next boot is fast
Switching to run level 0
sending all process the term signal
stopping local [OK]
-> When I reboot here, the next boot is very slow.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
fast boot takes 40 sec(used stop watch, good for a 900 Mhz celeron processor) to reach kde login screen. And kde is responsive.
Slow boot takes 6"30sec to reach kde login screen. And kde is not responsive too.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whst is that stopping local? Have I given a useful hint to solve this problem. _________________ http://yzonesoft.buildtolearn.net |

Hi!
I would like to share my experience. Well, this is a matter of preference, of course, but the pair vixie-cron & metalog works excellent. I have never had any boot problems with my PIV box using these programs. The total boot time is about 40 seconds including KDE ready for work (33 seconds before startx and 7 seconds after the command). It is the hotplug service that takes up the longest time (usb hotplugging to be more exact; if this could be shortened the total boot would take about 20 seconds). I think, it might be possible to speed up the boot, but that's quite all right with me for the time being.
Best wishes

yzonesoft,
stopping local means the content of /etc/conf.d/local.stop is being run. Its usually empty. _________________ Regards,

Very true. Mine is empty. I think yzonesoft might be right saying that syslog-ng is likely to cause the problem. Any ideas ?
Best wishes

I have local.stop file with lines commented
# /etc/conf.d/local.stop:
# $Header: /home/cvsroot/gentoo-src/rc-scripts/etc/conf.d/local.stop,v 1.4 2002/11/18 19:39:22 azarah Exp $
# This is a good place to unload any misc.
# programs you started above.
# For example, if you are using OSS and have
# "/usr/local/bin/soundon" above, put
# "/usr/local/bin/soundoff" here.
Oh dear, Where could be wrong. _________________ http://yzonesoft.buildtolearn.net |
