I was just wanting to take a poll to see which window manager/desktop environment is used by the most Gentoo users. I myself use Fluxbox for its mixture of speed, customability, and coolness factor. ;)

Screenshot

If you want all the stuff configured that way and all, I can make a tarball for you Flux users that like my theme.

I chose GNOME because it's what I'm using right now. However, in the past, I've used (for long periods of time) kde, xfce, xfce4, fluxbox, windowmaker, waimea, kahakai, blackbox, xpde, enlightenment, icewm and twm. I don't think that this poll is very useful, do you?

-1 Flamebait, btw.

Yeah, well some people make decisions, and other people perform all possible actions. I myself make decisions after trying other options. ;)

Even though I prefer fluxbox for sheer speed, I use KDE due to ease of use, ability to easily install printers etc., and because my particular pc is a multiuser system and the other users are not linux savvy.

KDE to me was extremely slow and clunky and had the feel of Windows that I didn't think Linux should ever have. Therefor I stuck with GNOME for a while. If you configure the Fluxbox menu correctly, other users should have no problems with using it, and setting keyboard shortcuts are easy and tabbing is great. I suppose we all our own likes/dislikes, but I must say that Fluxbox has to be the best out there that I've used so far, at least IMO.

I'm a OSX user on the 'desktop'... and I'm a gentoo user on the 'server' :)

Will mention that KDE is probably the most mature desktop on Linux, and has a set of very coherent APIs that make it very easy to develop with. Might be too easy though :-)

GNOME is also quite fun to play with at times. As is fvwm.

FVWM. It just makes my life so much eassier, once you have a respectable config (tavis, ikaro) and mod it enough (or not at all) it makes any wm nothing, but never use the default config, it just looks like crap.

Once I can get X.org (X11 R6.7) and XFce4 to play nicely I'll be using XFce4.

I tried xorg-x11, but it didn't register the extra keys on my Logitech internet keyboard correctly, so I just switched back to xfree using the binary package I made before taking the plunge into xorg-x11. Had tons of problems with using certain fonts too. :( Oh well, I suppose I'll stick with xfree and be happy.

The only thing else I have to say is... good, KDE is not winning. lol

I use kahakai because its the only one I can stand but the development died. Pwnz3r, to make it look better, you should probably change those ugly default rox icons to something else :D

I am using the fluxbox. I just have got myself familiar with this. It's quite light and it's quite simple too. Can't be loving it :)

If I'm not using the fluxbox, I will use KDE. Don't know why, it just feels good too. But the fluxbox is better ;)

I use KDE on both desktop and notebook. KDE doesn't feel very slow at all after disabling menu animations, tooltip animations, etc. Fluxbox is without a doubt faster than KDE, but I also realized that a part of that feel comes from the lack of animations in menus. Also, the lack of a 3rd mouse button on this notebook would probably be a little annoying in flux...

I use KDE. I tried Gnome when I used Fedora, but I couldn't find a way to make the taskbar hide itself when the mouse wasn't over it, so I switched to KDE. I haven't tried any others, and I probably won't anytime soon just because KDE suits my puposes (almost) perfectly (for the time being).

It's a little buggy though, but not too bad.

I think flamewars about this kind of thing are stupid too. It's like arguing that vanilla ice cream is better than chocolate ice cream. Or, that right-handed people are better than left-handed people.

I mean, everyone knows if you don't eat chocolate ice cream with your left hand then you are a loser

KDE - On my main desktop
Fluxbox mainly on my older machines, though I have Gnome on one just to keep an eye on new stuff in it.

I love them all, but I voted for KDE as that's what I spend the most time in front of.
