Many thanks to all Gentooers who posted priceless postings. Without them, I couldn't have installed the most beautiful Linux distro, Gentoo 2004.0. I had menu font problems in Firefox, Mozilla, and OpenOffice. And the postings really helped me. I'd like to summarize them and show my screen shots (screen size wxga 1280x800).
Click on these links for the screen shots.

If the above links don't work, try these:

<1> Mozilla Firefox Menu Fonts
1] check & use java & moznoxft options
Code: | emerge --usepkg --pretend --verbose mozilla-firefox |
Code: | USE=moznoxft emerge --usepkg mozilla-firefox |
2] edit userChrome.css
3] If --usepkg generates blurry menu fonts, unmerge and emerge again without it.
<2> Mozilla Menu Fonts
1] check & use java & moznoxft options
Code: | emerge --usepkg --pretend --verbose mozilla |
Code: | USE=moznoxft emerge --usepkg mozilla |
2] edit userChrome.css -> including /home/your_user_id/.mozilla/
3] If --usepkg generates blurry menu fonts, unmerge and emerge again without it.
<3> OpenOffice Menu Fonts
1] Tool -> Options -> OpenOffice.org -> View
uncheck Screen font antialiasing
2] Tool -> Options -> OpenOffice.org -> Fonts
check Apply replacement table
type (in "Font") Andale Sans UI
choose (in "Replace with") your favorite font (for example, OpenSymbol)
click the green check-mark next to "Replace with"
check Always and Screen in the middle box
<4> Gimp 2.0 Pre R3
Quote: | The menu font is ugly. Gimp-freetype doesn't for this pre-release version. Somehow, Gimp 1.2.5 I emerged with --usepkg or ebuild didn't work at all for me. |
I updated the GIMP screen shot. The menu font looks okay only when I comment out "export LANG='ko_KR" in /etc/profile. That is, only when I use English as my default language. |
