Gentoo has made it to the "major distributions" category on distrowatch.com
Nice to see Gentoo gaining such rapid acceptance!

According to the site:
| Quote: | | The Top Ten Linux distribution table contains major and internationally recognized Linux distributions, together with one or two regional ones receiving most page views. Exactly what constitutes "Top Ten" is of course a matter of opinion and is open to discussion. The idea is to place the most well-knows distributions on one page, which can be viewed, and the content easily compared, on a 1024x768 resolution monitor. |
And, as of May 1, 2002, Gentoo is on that page.

Gentoo is now number 7!
Above Slack!
Guess it is catching on and Gentoo team is doing something (read everything) right!

As a newbie a must say few things here:
I see these good things in gentoo:
-this forum!!
-emerge system
-I got installed only what i needed
-no fear that one day I should pay big $ for small things!
What could be done to even improve:
-doc section is quite important to all us newbies. Some new guides would be nice to see (international keyboards and fonts, administration of system from a Windows view (..since most of us come from that hell!), compiling kernel...)
-WEBMIN is interesting admin tool and is very helpfull when you try to change something and don't even know where to find it! (point and click still works with newbies ) |

Not sure if you've already seen this, but we have an unofficial documentation forum here that contains a few helpful HOWTOs contributed by various forum members.
If we could get more people to contribute, that would be great. You mentioned some areas where we could certainly use some improved documentation -- you might consider putting together a doc on your own. You don't have to be a linux expert -- many of the docs in the documentation forum were written by self-described linux newbies.
Regarding learning linux administration after coming from a linux world, check out this book by Mark Minasi. I found it very helpful when I made the transition.
Also, make sure to check out The Linux Documentation Project. While not Gentoo-specific, many/most of the documents there can be used on a Gentoo installation with only minor modifications. Their list of HOWTOs covers things like kernel compiling, internationalization, fonts, etc.

Actually if you email the webmaster they will be more than happy to add anything relevant, I emailed them once about the gentoo forums not being in a particular place on the site and they updated it immediately and sent me a nice email reply letting me know. _________________ This message self destructed a long time ago. |

Yea, but still #4 on page hit rankings....
Silly Yoper. I didn't like yoper, didn't impress me at all with all that kde stuff and you still have to work really hard to get all the stuff setup correct like X and mouse and what not.
Granted that there are some ppl on slashdot that are now comparing gentoo to deb and showing how gentoo is evil compared to deb.... mostly with the mplayer issues.
Ah well. Viva la Gentoo! <sp?> |
