[mod edit] changed title from Emerge sync errors: link_stat "metadata/timestamp.chk&a -- pilla

Code:
 # emerge sync
>>> starting rsync with rsync://rsync.namerica.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage...
>>> checking server timestamp ...
This is rsync21.us.gentoo.org.

Welcome to the UW-Madison Chemistry rsync Server!!!
...blahblahblah...

receiving file list ...
link_stat "metadata/timestamp.chk" (in gentoo-portage) failed: No such file or directory
0 files to consider
client: nothing to do: perhaps you need to specify some filenames or the --recursive option?
rsync error: some files could not be transferred (code 23) at main.c(653)
>>> retry ...

>>> Starting retry 1 of 3
>>> checking server timestamp ...

<cut out retries>

>>> Starting retry 3 of 3

CEDE Gentoo Mirror

receiving file list ...
0 files to consider
client: nothing to do: perhaps you need to specify some filenames or the --recursive option?
rsync error: some files could not be transferred (code 23) at main.c(653)

!!! Rsync has not successfully finished. It is recommended that you keep
!!! trying or that you use the 'emerge-webrsync' option if you are unable
!!! to use rsync due to firewall or other restrictions. This should be a
!!! temporary problem unless complications exist with your network
!!! (and possibly your system's filesystem) configuration.

Well here we all are, somehow somewhere, we all did something similar that corrupted our system.

I just recently moved my /usr directory to a new harddrive following the instructions found here;

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=121164

Now I've been having issues with my newly created directories mounting at boot (mostly because of quota problems arising with reiserfs) but have any of you guys done something similar?

Got this too, on PPC.

My old HD died recently, so I moved my gentoo installation to my new hd.
emerge-webrsync still works fine!

Yep, you're right, I did update rsync...
Must have something to do with it...
Luckily 'emerge-webrsync' still works, but that's dated yesterday...

Well except for doing a daily sync, nothing has changed on my end and all i get is:

Quote:
0 files to consider
client: nothing to do: perhaps you need to specify some filenames or the --recursive option?
rsync error: some files could not be transferred (code 23) at main.c(653)

so this leads me to believe that there may be an issue with the sync servers?

yup, me too. emerge world last night did an upgrade to rsync 2.6, and now it's borked.

I swear I remember it saying something about configuration during the emerge process... about not manually disabling some setting in the conf file... but I don't remember what.

Hopefully someone figures this out...

I'm pretty sure the problem is on the server side.

I'd tend to agree that it's something with the servers...

Hi,

since the upgrade to rsync-2.6.0 I have the same troubles. I tried to downgrade to rsync-2.5.7 but this has no effect.

I had the same problem as you, but found a solution.
I juste did an:

emerge-webrsync

and then I updated portage with the following:

emerge sys-apps/portage-2.0.50_pre14

I was then able to make emerge rsync work.
