Finally got the damn thing sorted. It was just that it didn't like my heavily patched kernels . Emerging vanilla-sources fixed it.

I got this tip from a message in the mplayer mail list.

Running gentoo-sources-2.4.19 here and it runs fine.

It would be nice if we could further narrow down this issue here.
I already asked karl to send me his .config.

I'm not willing to give up, this has to work with gentoo-sources...
