Code:
Feb 24 00:06:44 rommie init: Id "c1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
Feb 24 00:06:45 rommie init: Id "c4" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
Feb 24 00:06:45 rommie init: Id "c2" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
Feb 24 00:06:45 rommie init: Id "c3" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
Feb 24 00:06:46 rommie init: Id "c5" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
Feb 24 00:06:46 rommie init: Id "c6" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

I presume this might have something to do with the fact I don't have a monitor/keyboard connected (headless) to the Ultra/1E, sort of like OpenBSD automatically enables a serial console when no keyboard is connected.

It seems that devfs doesn't want to create any ttyX nodes in /dev, I've even tried to enabled full compatability mode for old devices in the devfsd.conf but it's still the same. I could remove all the agetty entries in the inittab but then I wouldn't have a login console if I ever needed one...

Is there something glaringly obvious I'm missing here?

Hi,

remove all agetty line expect the ttyS0 from /etc/inittab, and reload init (init -q).

Example for remove:
c1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty1 linux

And you can remove conseolefont from boot runlevel.
rc-update del consolefont boot

regards Martin

Yes, but that in itself wouldn't give me any console login terminals and all subsequent remote logins (i.e. ssh) would be on terminals pty/sX (serial I presume) because no pty/X are available.

Removing those entries won't effect remote logins. They just control the local virtual consoles.

On a headless machine, my /etc/inittab looks like the following (with comments omitted);

Code:

id:3:initdefault:

si::sysinit:/sbin/rc sysinit

rc::bootwait:/sbin/rc boot

l0:0:wait:/sbin/rc shutdown
l1:S1:wait:/sbin/rc single
l2:2:wait:/sbin/rc nonetwork
l3:3:wait:/sbin/rc default
l4:4:wait:/sbin/rc default
l5:5:wait:/sbin/rc default
l6:6:wait:/sbin/rc reboot

c0:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 9600 ttyS0 vt100

ca:12345:ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -r now

x:a:once:/etc/X11/startDM.sh
