I have tried with a -j1 but with no luck. This has been going on for a many weeks. I've been emerging around it until I got some time to investigate it. Is there a fix, or is this a bug?

The actual build error is not at the end. The message
Code:
1 module(s):
   basic
need(s) to be rebuilt
you are seeing tells only that it failed, not what exactly failed. You have to find the failing gcc/ld/... call and post it here.

Looks like this is a bug, you may want to report it in the Gentoo bugzilla.
