|

Hi,
I'm a new Gentoo user and am not sure if I'm asking this question in the correct place. If it's more printing oriented than PPC oriented I can repost it or would be glad for an admin to move the topic. I've also searched the net for info on this question but could not find anything useful.
I want to use cups-pdf on my PPC KuroBox (not a Mac) but the package is marked as being unstable for PPC {~ppc). Why is this? I have searched for bugs or bug listing from http://packages.gentoo.org/ebuilds/?cups-pdf-1.6.4 and other places and cannot find what the problem is. What makes cups-pdf unstable on platforms besides x86?
Are their people working on getting it stable for PPC?
Since I cannot find any info about the reasons for it being marked ~ppc, I don't know whether it's a good idea to even test it. |

As far as I know things tend to stay on PPC longer until someone tries the package, finds that it is okay, and then posts to say it is fine. As there are fewer PPC users there tend to be more unstable packages than under x86.
It probably just means that nobody has reported that it is okay on PPC. This could be because the maintainer of the package does have a PPC machine., but I don't know this as this is wild speculation. Sorry.
Just my $0.02. |

tinwood,
Thanks for your explanation. Since it was untested on PPC, I went ahead and installed it. After some frustrating configuration problems with samba and the cups windows printing drivers, I can say that that cups-pdf is working fine for me on my PPC box.
Who should I report my success to so they can take that into consideration for removing the ~ppc? |

Hi there again,
A quick look at the PPC forum suggests that you post a report to gentoo-ppc-dev@gentoo.org.

3) **VERY IMPORTANT** : In order to help up ppc developers get more things tested and keyworded, if you do happen to use this method and the build(s) you installed work, please please report it either by emailing gentoo-ppc-dev@gentoo.org with the report of the exact build(s) you installed or talking to a ppc dev in IRC, at irc.openprojects.net in #gentoo-ppc. The same goes for any verified non-working builds (that don't already have -ppc in them)

Hope that helps
Cheers
Alex. |

Thanks again. Apparently that is a mailing list that so you have to be subscribed to in order to report. So I just posted a reply in the thread you linked to.
Thanks again. |
