NEED to recover a deleted folder on reiserfs, PLEASE HELP!!

Post by hjlane3 » Sun Feb 01, 2004 1:46 pm

I need some serious help. I had my reiserfs partition crap out on me earlier, so i booted off the livecd and ran fsck.reiserfs so i could recover my data. Everything worked fine. I found out where my home dir was on the restored partition, went there, and went to back it up into another parition. But I fucked up horribly. Instead of mv -rf home /mnt/bkup/ , I did rm -rf home /mnt/bkup !!!!
:x :x :x :o :o :o :x :x :x :!: :!: :!: :!:
I NEED to recover my home partition or I"m totally fucked. For the love of pete, can anyone please help me?!?! I absoultely, possitively need to get the data back! the first thing I did when i realized i fucked up was unmount the partition, and remout as read-only.
PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!! and please refrain from pointing out my obvious stupidy , I know i screweed up big time.
Thanks

I have no idea if this is feasible for your situatin, but a quick google gave me this:

Linux Undelete

Unfortunately the page is scant on information, so I don't know if will work for reiserfs or not. But it is something to look into.

Seeing as the last release of that software, linux undelete, was in 1999, i doubt I should even bother with it. But thanks for the help!
Anyone else?? :x

This has saved my ass once (reiser):

dd if=/dev/hda1 of=/tmp/backup.dsk
losetup /dev/loop5 /tmp/backup.dsk

reiserfsck --rebuild-tree --scan-whole-partition /dev/loop5

Yes, this should definitely be made a sticky. Linux systems are easy to fuck up badly (if you're root :)), but on the other hand they can almost always be fully recovered.

This is a great tip, maybe it should be moved to Documentation, Tips & Tricks?
