PostPosted: Thu Jun 10, 2004 5:18 am    Post subject: kde & hicolor icon theme errors Reply with quote

When I start any kde app from a console, it spews out a heap of errors concerning invalid icons.

After a week my .xsession-errors file has grown to a mulitude of megabytes.

Can anybody confirm this error and propose a solution?
(I have it on multiple systems)

This is what my console outputs when i type kediti for instance:
Code:

Run this as user.
Code:
kdebugdialog --fullmode

"Look for debug area 264, and change the combobox for the warning to "None""

http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80839#c3

This will make the warnings disappear, but the problem is with the gnome-icons and hi-color-icons apparently having some "extra" info in the theme files or something. I just found this answer today since everything else I always did didn't work for very long.

I'll try that!
thanks

Update:

Well at least it prevents stuffing my home dir with .xsession-errros. :)

Cool

I imagine there's lots of people who use a login manager instead of just startx that have a very large ~/.xsession-errors file they might not be aware of. If you use startx then all the errors just get dumped in the terminal you startx from.

Amazing, unmergein the x11-themes/hicolor-icon-theme got me rid of most of the warnings, but i still some warnings :-

Code:

kdecore (KIconLoader): WARNING: Icon directory /home/jazz/.kde3.2/share/icons/nuvola/ group  not valid.
kdecore (KIconLoader): WARNING: Icon directory /usr/share/icons/gnome/ group 192x192/emblems not valid.
kdecore (KIconLoader): WARNING: Icon directory /usr/share/icons/gnome/ group 96x96/emblems not valid.
kdecore (KIconLoader): WARNING: Icon directory /usr/share/icons/gnome/ group 72x72/emblems not valid.
kdecore (KIconLoader): WARNING: Icon directory /usr/share/icons/gnome/ group 48x48/emblems not valid.
kdecore (KIconLoader): WARNING: Icon directory /usr/share/icons/gnome/ group 36x36/emblems not valid.
kdecore (KIconLoader): WARNING: Icon directory /usr/share/icons/gnome/ group 24x24/emblems not valid.
kdecore (KIconLoader): WARNING: Icon directory /usr/share/icons/gnome/ group 12x12/emblems not valid.
kdecore (KIconLoader): WARNING: Icon directory /usr/share/icons/gnome/ group scalable/emblems not valid.
kdecore (KIconLoader): WARNING: Icon directory /home/jazz/.kde3.2/share/icons/nuvola/ group  not valid.
konqueror: WARNING: KGenericFactory: instance requested but no instance name passed to the constructor!
kdecore (KIconLoader): WARNING: Icon directory /home/jazz/.kde3.2/share/icons/nuvola/ group  not valid

Any way to get rid of them too ? also on the bugs list i saw some code to be added to kicontheme.cpp file around line 514, anyone done that ?
Can some post the steps please ?

BYe,
Jazz

read the post before your question...
"kdebugdialog --fullmode" solves the problem from it's source.

I disagree. It is a work around. I think this is quite a serious bug. IT may break your systsem if you are not aware of the large .xsession... file when your harddrive fills up.

Sure the proposed workaround works, but such a workaround should be VERY temporary.

x11-themes/hicolor-icon-theme isn't necessary for kde, so you can safely unmerge it.
I now it isn't a solution but it's better than ignoring the warnings...

If you haven't installed kde or the "kde environment" (QT?) then I don't see how it's possbile to be getting KDE warning/error messages??

kdebugdialog is part of kde-base/kdebase.

Perhaps you have some QT program installed that has the QT stuff built into it? There's a version of Skype that is like that so I'd guess there are other programs built that way. I don't really know though because of the "crap" I use for my desktop. ;)

Hmmm one must have some kde to run quanta.

Quote:
Runtime Dependencies
quanta-3.3_pre20040506

kde-base/kde-env3
>= kde-base/kdelibs - 3.2
>= x11-libs/qt - 3.2

So you should have kdebase installed, so /usr/kde/3.2/bin/kdebugdialog would be where the missing program is. (3.1 if you have an older version).

I don't have an answer to your other questions but you might try running:
Code:
/usr/kde/3.2/bin/kdeinit kcontrol

and if it works check under "Appearance & Themes/Icons or Style".

I tried that. I set the WARNING and info messages to go to file instead but I still get the messages...

[EDIT]
 You have to select the correct message type (264) in the debug area combo box.

After that all is well...

Just thank the Gnome people for having to have the "stock" directories. :) Apparently that's the onlr reason they are there and KDE doesn't need them so it spits out the warning about them. It looks like the fix has been commited to cvs for kde which simply just tells kde not to give a warning about this "new" icon theme directory structure. So making the warnings "go away" was the fix. There wasn't an actuall error due to the warning, just an annoyance.

No point in having things a standard way when you can purposly make things work and look different right? The Gnome vs. KDE has some deep roots it seems.

for me this did the trick:

as root:
cd /usr/share/icons/hicolor/
cp index.theme index.desktop

( maybe you need this in some other subdirs of /usr/share/icons too ... )
... now there are no more complains about wrong icon dirs anymore.

But i dunno if this is a "right" way to fix the prob..

I agree, this worked for me too. Is this doing anything bad to KDE or Gnome?

I was having the same problem. Look at your index.theme in those directories. Mine were corrupt. Removed directories, re-installed, voila! I think it happened one of those times I upgraded my KDE. As much as I like KDE, I"m about to a point where I want to pitch it.

I unmerged gnome-icon-theme, after which no more messages appeared.
This leaves the hicolor theme in place.
