kde-3.2 k-menu weirdness

i must say - the kde-3.2 k-menu is _really_ weird. i found three locations where k-menu entries are saved:

/usr/kde/3.2/share/applnk
~/.kde3.2/share/applnk
~/.local/applnk

when i start kmenuedit to create a new menu entry, it is being saved in ~/.local/applnk. but there a no subdirectories (like internet, office etc.) _all_ user-created applinks are just saved in this one dir. also, i can move around or change entries in the other two applnk dirs under /usr but nothing in the k-menu changes at all. there are several entries in the k-menu that i want to remove, rename or give another icon, but it doesn't work!

i'd like to have all k-menu entries saved under ~ somewhere, because i want to have my personal menu. what's the best way to do this? how does this applnk stuff really work? i already did some searching on kde.org with no result!

don't forget if you upgrade from kde3.1, then a lot of things point to ~/kde3.1!
It's a pain get rid of kde3.1.
