I'm getting this on 'emerge -u world'.

Any ideas? Appreciate any help.

Calculating world dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge (1 of 1) sys-apps/kbd-1.08-r5 to /
>>> md5 src_uri kbd-1.08.tar.gz
>>> Unpacking source...
>>> Unpacking kbd-1.08.tar.gz to /var/tmp/portage/kbd-1.08-r5/work
tar: ./kbd-1.08/doc/utf/\342\231\252\342\231\254: Cannot open: Invalid argument
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

!!! ERROR: sys-apps/kbd-1.08-r5 failed.
!!! Function unpack, Line 332, Exitcode 2
!!! failure unpacking kbd-1.08.tar.gz

Just came across same problem myself and came up with a way around it

One question though are u using jfs ??

The problem seemed to be only on jfs for me ?

Either it is a limition on jfs or i missing a nls setting in my kernel which is quite possible.

If have a unix filesytem that is not jfs

If u dont have another filesystem to play with, if would be possible to use a ram based filesystem, but i have never done that :(

create 2 directorys on another unix filesystem
rm -r * /var/tmp/portage/kbd-1.08-r5
ln -s DirectoryA /var/tmp/portage/kbd-1.08-r5
mkdir /usr/share/doc/kbd-1.08-r5
ln -s DirectoryB /usr/share/doc/kbd-1.08-r5

emerge kbd

rm /var/tmp/portage/kbd-1.08-r5
mv DirectoryA /var/tmp/portage/kbd-1.08-r5
rm /usr/share/doc/kbd-1.08-r5
mv DirectoryB /usr/share/doc/kbd-1.08-rc5

* Note on last step there was a file i couldnt copy over in html/utf directory
this is only for help documents so is not need to run kbd :o

Going to recompile my kernel with all nls options included, + emerge kbd to see if it is jfs or my kernel. :(

Well, here's what I did:

1) Unpacked kbd-1.08.tar.gz
2) Took out the offending file which seems to be /doc/utf/{some realy funky name}
3) tar/gzipped it back up
4) emerge kbd
5) edit the file in <portage_home>/sys-apps/kbd/files/kbd-1.08-r5 to reflect the new digest
6) emerge kbd

I just remounted my JFS volumes with "-o iocharset=utf8" and that seemed to do the trick.
