I know liking Real isn't popular these days but I tried the new Real HelixPlayer last night and it is far superior (in terms of stability and interface) to RealPlayer G2 and RealOne. It would be really sweet to have an ebuild for it. |

That's good to know. I know that the original realplayer on linux isn't very stable, and the realone player was even worse. I still have the original realplayer emerged just to have the codec so that xine can play rm files.
I too would like to see an ebuild for this, just to test it out.
(If there is any sort of documentation for setting up and installing the new helix player I might be able to make an ebuild to install it, but I'm not a guru at it) |

I would also like to see it in portage, if only because of the choice. The Helix-player looks interesting.
irasnyd--> Heh, I didn't know I could use Xine to watch rm-files Thx! _________________ --- checking for native Win32 platform... no |

Yeah an ebuild would be nice.
I tried installing it from source but gave up. They decided to do their own build system in python and then they expect you to read ~10 pages just to install the helix player. Furthermore I have to agree on their self-made license (OSS) and create an account on their website to be able to download the source. In the end I just gave up. |

I just downloaded and installed a nightly binary build. It starts up fast and looks to be using gtk2 for the interface. Playing RealVideo streams is, compared to both RealPlayer8 and MPlayer, amazing: it works flawlessly, without hick-ups, even when maximed to fullscreen... I'm amazed since this is, well, a Real product. I'll test it some more, maybe I'll be reassured, and it turns out to be a POS after all
EDIT: Ah, yes, seeking in streams doesn't work. Segfault while changing prefs. Phew! |

I'm looking to capture a stream this weekend, broadcast in rm as well as wmv. Can I use Helix to capture the rm stream?
Also, are there any other ways to capture a stream? |

You can use mencoder to record a stream. I've done it a couple of months back, I believe after reading on these forums about it. You can probably find it with the search. Searching for any combination of mencoder, real and stream should point you that thread. |

Best way to just wget the stream. Sometimes that may not work, then use mplayer -dumpstream. |

Even if it's just a -bin ebuild. It works at least as well as reaplay8 and realone, AND it's about time that there's a Real browser plugin that works with Mozilla. |
