I had some major troubles (see this https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=80307&highlight=). So I totally recompiled the system starting from the bootstrap. I had just learned about the pfeifer kernel so I tried that, didn't especially like the performance, and tried to swtich back to ck-sources. I had compiled the kernel many times before and know how to make all the correct changes.

Now, when I choose the new kernel entry in grub, it boots fine. However, when I run kdm (to logon to kde) I get a different login than usual. It gives me a list of all the "users" on the system and only have the sessions "default" and "failsafe" available. So, I scroll down and choose my username, scott. I put my password in and push enter. All I see is a greenish screen and a mouse pointer. And everything is frozen. I can't move the mouse and the keyword is not working either. I tried hitting Ctrl-Alt-F1, to no avail. So I had to push the power button.

So, I turned back on the computer and selected my previous pfeifer kernel. After rebuilding the nvidia-kernel I tried starting kdm and also got the same strange login with only default and failsafe. However, this time it didn't freeze, but only get a little terminal in the upper left corner and no kde desktop.

Why is kde freezing with the latest ck-sources and why aren't only root/my username showing up and allowing me to choose kde 3.1.2 as a session?

BTW, I can get to the windows manager by typing "startx" under both kernels. I tried recompiling kdelibs to the latest version, but it failed with a message about libmad. I tried emerging kdelibs after unemerging libmad and after recompiling it, but I get the same error.

Any help?

Thanks,
Scott

This is so frusturating because I did exactly the same thing as I did before when I wanted to try different kernels.

Thanks,
Scott

I guess the freeze can come from a lot of things, especially when it comes to the ck-source kernel. Did you use the same configuration for your pfeifer kernel and your ck-kernel? (I never heard of pfeifer either but I have not been on my computer for about one month).

Besides, you may want to try to decrease all the boost paramaters in the CK kernel to see if they are the ones making you crash.

Finally, it may just be a bug with kdm... especially since you can acess all the windows managers with startx.

I had my timer frequency set at 500, would that affect anything? Also, I just fixed my kdmrc file, which was borked. Why, when I had to force the computer off did that file get corrupted?

And yes, I did the make oldconfig before going into menuconfig for the ck-sources, so the configuration was the same.

[edit] I've got back into kdm by replacing my kdmrc file from the one in the portage kdebase directory and that finally works again. I guess what I thought was kdm was actually xdm. I'm emerging gaming-sources right now because I read that it is based off of the ck-sources. Then I might try the latest mm-sources. I'm using the latest pfeifer sources and typing this while gaming-sources is emerging. The text lags behind my typing and the mouse movement is jerky. This did not happen with the ck-sources that I had been using before the "major problems" occurred (see first post). I'm going to swtich kernels ASAP because the speed while emerging is horrible. Before I could emerge 3 at once and listen to music and everything would be smooth.

You're not alone in the problems with ck sources. Of course, I sort of anticipated problems with this release. System hard-locks are very common here with that 2.4.22 kernel. My advice, don't use it ;-)
