Hi, when I install gentoo, in my development category where my programs are stored in my DE there is a program that i haven't installed and it's called "sandbox". If I open it it takes me to some kind of CLI but I don't really understand what it is that for. Could someone explain it to me?

Sandbox is a helper shell to notify the user if a program is misbehaving and writing files where you don't expect it to. You'll get a warning and sandbox will stop the program from writing that file. Sandbox is a bit different than a chroot as it still allows the program to "look" like it's running in a normal environment, and even with root.
Sandbox is used by Portage to make sure packages' install scripts don't write files unexpectedly - so every Gentoo install should have it. The sandbox package ended up installing an entry that will show up in DE's, and hence you see it. |
