Hi,

Sometimes, my PC unexpectedly closes my session (log out) while I am working, and puts me back the login window. If I have terminal 1 logged with root and 2 logged with another user (without X), these ones are not logged out. For example, for the last two hours, it has happened four times. The last two while typing this post and launching ksnapshot.

Other times, it leads to a reboot. So I have investigated:

the UPS, but the behaviour is unchanged without it).
the temperatures, but everything looks fine.

I have started to investigate also:

the memory (totally tested and passed).

Sounds like your desktop environment crashes, or the x server. After it happens, do not log back in immediatly, but go to a text terminal and check in /var/log the files Xorg.0.log(.old), kdm.log (assuming you're using kdm), messages and in your home folder .xsession-errors for error messages.

Does the problem happen on a more recent kernel? If I recall correctly, 2.6.37 is not a long term kernel, and there have been many important kernel fixes throughout the tree since then, some of which are security fixes.

What is the output of emerge --info? It would help us to know more about your software environment, and that provides extensive information quickly.

also take a look at the 'dmesg' output after the logout in addition to the other suggestions

I finally used my backup. I don't know what was the origin of the problem. Sorry for answering so late, this summer was very apocalyptic.
