From what I can find out about it, the xfapplet has been effectively discontinued, because it was originally designed to display gnome panel applets in xfce. However, when Gnome3 came out, Gnome completely did away with the gnome panel for the Unity. So it in short, took out support for the panel applets as a whole, and making it so the xfapplet can't support Gnome3 along with all the old applets from Gnome2. Now as far as, displaying the panel applets from Mate (which is said to have Gnome2 interface); I can't really say. I don't know if Gnome3 has some new applet system, as I've moved away from Gnome shortly after Gnome3 came out (I personally dislike the Unity display).

If you are trying to get a specific applet to work in xfce, let us know which one. So we can maybe find either way to get it to work, or possibly suggest an alternative.
