mrtg not working in gentoo [solved]

Peace, i installed mrtg according to
http://www.gentoo-wiki.info/HOWTO_SNMP_and_MRTG_Made_Easy
i installed only the traffic option but mrtg is not working.
http://10.33.0.7/mrtg/
shows the ports but without the graphs.
/var/www/localhost/htdocs/mrtg
has index.html
mrtg-l.png
mrtg-m.png
mrtg-r.png
and no other files.

where have i gone wrong?

the problem was with the file called traffic.
according to
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-105862-start-0.html
i renamed it to traffic.sh and ran it thrice. then generated the index and graphs are being dispalyed.

now i have a new problem.
it seems mrtg stops working after a period in time. nagios says
" file is x minutes old"
i run
sh /etc/cron.mrtg/traffic.sh
three times and the eror disappears. is this a problem with the cron job? mrtg restart dosn't seem to help.

i unmerged mrtg and deleted almost everything and reinstalled everything, this time i restarted and mrtg worked.
