PostPosted: Wed Aug 20, 2014 7:18 am    Post subject: [SOLVED] X resolution correct but desktop too wide by c. 5px Reply with quote

I have been slooowly but surely installing a new Gentoo system on a new disk partition off-and-on over the past 3 weeks, and have finally gotten to the point where I'm choosing a desktop. My current ("old") desktop (which I'm using as I type this message) is Gnome-2, but the whole Gnome-3/systemd/upower-0.99 debacle has caused me to look elsewhere for my new desktop.

With LightDM as a login manager, I have tried both MATE (essentially Gnome-2 with future support prospects) and LXDE, and in both cases (thus I'm assuming this must be an X issue, not just a desktop configuration issue), I'm having the following problem:

My desktop is in the correct resolution at the right refresh rate (1920x1080@60, the preferred/native settings for my Dell S2209W LCD monitor), but the desktop itself appears to be too wide by what I estimate to be about 5 pixels!

This is obvious in MATE because the right half of the last digit of the "seconds" in the panel clock is chopped off. And instead of the mouse pointer stopping flush with the right side of the screen, as it does in my current Gnome-2, it goes right off the side of the screen. Slowly moving it back to the left, it takes about 4–6 pixels (by "feel") before it appears again. Similarly, in LXDE, the right-most icon in the panel is chopped off.

So, it's clear that the desktop really is too wide. How could this happen, and how do I fix it?

My first thought was to use my monitor's Auto Adjust feature, which worked wonders when I was choosing a good resolution for the console (VT1, etc.), but in this case it thinks everything is hunky-dory and doesn't appear to change anything.

BTW, note that, as I said before, this is a fresh installation with almost everything at their default settings (followed the Gentoo Wiki guides for installing X, MATE, LightDM, and LXDE, but AFAIR have not had to change any settings from their defaults — in particular, I'm not using any /etc/X11/xorg.conf*).

My graphics card is "NVIDIA Corporation C61 [GeForce 6150SE nForce 430] (rev a2)" (lspci) and I'm using the built-in Nouveau driver in the 3.12.21-gentoo-r1 kernel (amd64).

For the record, the "477 x 268 mm" figure seems to match what I get with a tape-measure for the monitor's visible screen area. By my calculations, that would imply about 102 DPI (H and V). I have no idea what "Setting screen physical size to 508 x 285" is supposed to mean. If that's in mm, that's a whopping 31 mm too wide and 17 mm too tall, neither of which match what I'm experiencing. So, I must be misunderstanding that line.

Finally, for the sake of completeness...

Every nvidia card I've ever used has had problems like this with unreliable EDID/analog timings. Sometimes it even changes depending on which driver's in use.

The most straightforward fix is to force a manual modeline; it looks like you can use `/usr/bin/cvt 1920 1080 60` in this case. You might also want to add "video=1920x1080M@60" to your kernel command line - that should prevent the timings changing between the boot process and when X starts up (i.e. glitch-free modesetting).

(The other fix is using DVI instead of VGA, but why waste working hardware...)

I neglected to say that my current/old system uses the nvidia driver, so I am indeed switching drivers here.

That's scary. ;) But I will try it.

Hmm. I'm using (on new system) "video=1280x720" because that gives me a reasonable text size on the console. I wouldn't want to use a 1920x1080 console.

Anyway, I'll try a couple of things and report back...

OK, well, the modeline worked (visually, nothing seems to be chopped off, and at the screen edge the pointer now behaves identically to my current/old system's nvidia driver + Gnome-2 desktop).

Thanks!

Unfortunately, it didn't also magically fix the upstream decision to force 96 DPI in xorg-server. ;)

So, I tried fixing that with DisplaySize, and it actually seems to have worked (others aren't so lucky).

The evidence:

/etc/X11/xorg.conf (full)
Code:

Yea!

Feeling all effectual, I decided to try out reduced blanking, since I'm using an LCD monitor.

Relevant lines of /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Code:
  Modeline    "1920x1080R"  138.50  1920 1968 2000 2080  1080 1083 1088 1111 +hsync -vsync
  Option      "PreferredMode" "1920x1080R"

With that, everything looks fine, and the monitor doesn't complain, but...

/var/log/Xorg.0.log snippet (reduced blanking)
Code:
(II) NOUVEAU(0): Modeline "1920x1080R"x59.9  138.50  1920 1968 2000 2080  1080 1083 1088 1111 +hsync -vsync (66.6 kHz UP)

xrandr -d :0 snippet (reduced blanking)
Code:
   1920x1080R     59.9*+

Ew. That 59.9 refresh rate bothered me, so I went back to not using reduced blanking.

At this point I discovered errors in dmesg that have been there since the first time I rebooted into a LightDM session (unfortunately, I didn't save any kernel logs from right after I installed and tested X):

dmesg -tl err (from my quick MATE session that first revealed the problem this thread is about, but similar errors in all kernel logs since)
Code:
EXT4-fs (sda9): couldn't mount as ext3 due to feature incompatibilities
EXT4-fs (sda9): couldn't mount as ext2 due to feature incompatibilities
nouveau E[    PBUS][0000:00:0d.0] MMIO write of 0x00200001 FAULT at 0x00b000
nouveau E[    PBUS][0000:00:0d.0] MMIO write of 0x00000000 FAULT at 0x00b000
nouveau E[    PBUS][0000:00:0d.0] MMIO write of 0x00200001 FAULT at 0x00b000

(Ignore the first 2 errors about EXT4-fs; they're normal.)

This is rather worrying, especially since a Google search for this kind of error turns up a number of bug reports containing words like "hang" and "crash". :(

But that's a matter for another thread (if I can't figure it out on my own..... so, yeah, another thread).

Marking this one SOLVED.
