|
|
I am at the stage in the Gentoo x86 handbook where we compile the kernel. It tells me that in a link it provides that I can install the vanilla-sources but upon attempting to emerge it: Code: | emerge vanilla-sources | I receive the following output:
Code: |
(chroot) ubuntu / # emerge vanilla-sources
Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild N ] sys-devel/bc-1.06.95 USE="readline -libedit -static"
[ebuild N ~] sys-kernel/vanilla-sources-3.16.1 USE="-build -deblob -symlink"
The following keyword changes are necessary to proceed:
(see "package.accept_keywords" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by vanilla-sources (argument)
=sys-kernel/vanilla-sources-3.16.1 ~x86
Use --autounmask-write to write changes to config files (honoring
CONFIG_PROTECT). Carefully examine the list of proposed changes,
paying special attention to mask or keyword changes that may expose
experimental or unstable packages.

I am new to Gentoo but not Linux, as you can see by the prompt I am installing trough an Ubuntu live DVD. I have looked on the internet and found that this means that the sources could be unstable, how can I get the original sources or the stable ones?

rurouni_hou_ou,
Welcome to Gentoo.
vanilla-sources are just as you would get from kernel.org
No security patches, no back ported patches ... just 'vanilla'.
Unstable in this context means not widely tested on Gentoo.
If you want to use this kernel, make the file /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords and add the line =sys-kernel/vanilla-sources-3.16.1 to it.
The ~x86 is assumed.
Read the portage man page about package.accept_keywords, as you may not want the suggested change exactly.
You may prefer a slightly different entry.
The gentoo-sources kernel is more widely tested on Gentoo and is based on vanilla sources with some back ported patches and a Gentoo specific patch that makes the kernel easier to configure for Gentoo users. _________________ Regards,

those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail. |

Could you please detail what these patches could be potentially for? Especially the Gentoo specific patch for configuring. |
